Why the Resistance Didn't Use B-Wings in The Last Jedi

Here is my best guess as to why we haven't seen B-Wing starfighters used by the Resistance in the sequel trilogy so far.

well....IF YOU REALLY wanna go there....why not use K-Wings? (yeah, thats an actual thing).

I don't like the idea Disney trying to force the whole underdog narrative as much as possible. It would have been cooler to see the New Republic (not the Resistance) defending the galaxy they tried so hard to liberate, instead of the First Order just immediately hitting the reset button.

They didn't use smaller, faster bombers because the director wanted a big WWII style battle and that means big clunky bombers lumbering slowly through space getting blasted apart by fighters.

They also did it to have that one girl die so rose would have something to cry about so we'd like her.

Same as with the Y-Wing; The out of universe explanation is that they were lazy with the ship designs.

The used the A-Wing again and despite the Y-Wing being old I actually do think they'd update them.

It's tough. It's most likely decisions like this were made outside of universe and then reasons for the story to make sense had to fit in.

It would have been cool to see b-wings fighting the first order.

Gonna be interesting to see how The Resistance is able to get a whole new fleet of Star Ships, X & A wings now if they were that worse off then the Rebels since there entire fleet has now been whipped out minus the Millenium Falcon.

I weep for the poor B-Wing. That ship with the very nifty design of being a flying knife blade in space got screwed over so many times over, whether it not making too many appearances in ROTJ due to technical difficulties, not being that good of a ship in the X-Wing series, just standing out so much like a sore thumb when stacked next to the X/Y/A-Wing, its in-universe technical difficulties preventing it from supplanting the Y-Wing as the Alliance bomber craft, and its very poor dogfighting abilities.

Very grateful to Bandai then for the upcoming release of the B-Wing for their Japanese-released model kits.

After rewatching the last Jedi it seems like most of the bombers were destroyed by rubble from other ships slamming into each other because they were ordered to stay in a tight formation. Also, later on some ties take out the bombers because they opened their bomb bay doors and armed the bombs prior to reaching the target. Keep in mind Paige’s bomber, which didn’t open its bay doors, was the only one left. Basic point: the ineffective ness of the bombers can be at least partially attributed to a mistake on Poe’s part.

B-Wings, K-Wings, Y-Wings. All would have been more effective and less suicidal.

Nice explanation, I'd like to know why the first order still used the original tie fighter design with a few minor improvements rather than something more powerful like tie defenders or even just tie interceptors

B-wings need more screen time!

We can upgrade the X-Wings and A-Wings but not strike bombers? The New Republic and or Resistance should've thought about it y'know to compliment it's starfighter corps.

Because of that rule "Kill the past if you must" thing was being enforced.

Thank you, your reasons were really good. I had been wondered about B-wings much more so than Y-wings for basically the reasons you stated in your last video.

Its nice to see someone talk about the logistical side of things instead of just the action.

Makes perfect sense but also could consider upkeep. B-wing was a heavy fighter/bomber, keeping a few fueled up and operational was probably too cost prohibited even if they could afford to purchase some or hand-me-downs.

When are you going to do a video about why the first order didn’t use tie interceptors in the force awakens or the last jedi ?

That's bizarre. Me and my friends were literally asking this question to eachother when we were rewatching TLJ last night and then you uploaded this shortly after. Like, we were having a 20 minute debate on why or why not they would be using B-Wings.

The problem with that is that the starfortress bombers are death traps. Not just slow, not just weakly protected/vulnerable, but also could not attack until they were basically point blank to a target AND they were specialized like B-Wings. If the resistance was anything like the rebellion, then they would actually chose NOT to use certain equipment because of safety (the starfortress being a shining example for the trash bin). Given a choice between Clone Wars era Y-Wing and the "modern" slow fragile starfortress I know which one I would choose if I was a resistance leader. Not to mention, the fact that the Y-Wings would actually be relatively easy to find and find parts for. The third option being Galactic War era B-Wings that were smaller, faster, but yes specialized just like the starfortress.

Also the X-Wings are a newer model not just maintained Galactic War models. Just eyeballing them, their wings and engines are different and that is just a superficial examination. A-Wings were originally a high maintenance nightmare so if they are around now, they too are likely to be newer models and not Galactic War antiques.

This also implies one of two things: Either someone was supplying the resistance with newer model fighters or somehow with seriously diminished resources the resistance itself was building new Starfighters and/or completely remodeling old Starfighters (with the former seeming more likely). If it was the latter, it would mean that nothing would stop the resistance from revamping the easy to acquire old Y-Wings into new Starfighters, but if it was the former then resistance to get its hands on newer model B-Wings.

I think you make a good case. I'd add to the issue of resources: B-Wings are, as you say, a very specialised fighter. I wonder if the resistance DID have some, but chose to prioritise keeping other ships running due to finite resources, and more general value being gained from starfighters like the X-wing and A-wing. This would very neatly explain why we see transports with cannabilised B-wing parts...
