Anycubic i3 Mega Upgrade Kit

Today I'm installing an upgrade kit from Anycubic on the Anycubic i3 Mega. This kit adds a metal spool holder as it only came with a separate acrylic one and it adds a Titan style extruder which makes printing materials like TPU super easy. The install takes only a few minutes and a quick flash of a new firmware and you are back to printing.

I did the S upgrade to my Mega about four months ago, and am very happy that I did. The original extruder always caused me headaches, to counter you, by always being terrible at gripping the filament. I love the new extruder.

Mine already has many mods but worked well out of the box. I’d recommend anyone considering these spend the extra and get the “S”. The spool holder is a big improvement and the generic Titan extruder and V6 hotend is worthwhile too. The filament sensor is a PITA and I’ve hard mounted mine with Bowden tube going from the outgo to the extruder intake. Makes filament change a breeze.
Another good video Shane !

-JUST ORDEWRED THE MEGA S FOR 90. EXCITED!!! MY FIRST PRINTER, THE MONOPRICE MINI V2 WAS OKAY BUT IT DIED.

I have the Pro which I thought was just an S with a laser attachment but apparently it also includes a filament sensor, X and y tmc2208 drivers (I don’t know why they didn’t just do all 5), and my extruder is clear instead of black. I think it’s the same type though… it’s a dual gear extruder. I’m definitely going to upgrade the other 3 stepper drivers and replace whatever fan sounds like it’s dying inside the machine (probably the stepper driver fan). The machine itself is super sturdy. I hate that Anycubic doesn’t easily upgrade but I plan to put Marlin on it later once I get the hardware working right.

Thanks for sharing 👍😀

There seem to be a few variants of this upgrade kit on the market. The one I received actually had a steps/mm setting of 480 i.e. a gear ratio of 5:1 instead of 3:1.

The stepper motor is also smaller than the one on the original extruder and does get quite hot during operation. A concern I have with this quite excessive gear ratio is achieving adequate retraction speeds due to the need to multiply your basic retraction speed by 3 or, in my case, by 5.

I just ordered mine. Hope it comes soon. I tried 3D printing early on, but had so many problems, I gave up and sold it all. I am retired now, and want to try again. I hope my i3 mega works well out of the box. I want to use it stock, and then decide if I want to up grade anything. I also assume the new ones have the upgraded motor, but what about the stepper motor upgrade?

What happened to this upgrade kit? The Amazon link shows it's unavailable. I'm bummed I was really looking forward to picking this up.

Thanks for the video! Looking forward to your thoughts on the new extruder. Mostly curious whether the upgrade is worth it if you mostly print with PLA. Have a good one!

Hi everyone,
I have an Anycubic mega S,
I'd like to buy, install and use the laser engraving. Is it that possible? Is it enough to change the firmware and is it available to download?

Second question in case i can set up my 3d printer to laser engrave.
I've installed a different firmware from the original which allowed me to do a manual auto- levelling. Is there any way I can save the set up before to replace the firmware in order to be able in the future to reinstall the actual firmer with the actual commands?

Thanks

Does the hotend upgrade improve printing in Nylon and other higher temp filaments?
I've got 2 i3 Mega units but can't get nylon to work for me. PLA+ and ABS work well.

ps. I'm a 3d printing noob, only had them a few weeks. Be gentle with me 😊

All of the i3-'S upgrade videos seem to deal with the hardware install only. Is there a link or video which goes into detail of installing the firmware? ie: different custom firmwares and a newguide for how to install?

You forgot the long screw to srew through the filament sensor and then screw it on side arm of the printer

I have a question? I just bought this kit and it should be in on Tuesday. When I install it should I upgrade my firmware to the latest Anycubic S firmware?

I'm a bit mystified with the files of your own. You mentioned that they are not hex files but I thought that they had to be hex files to load into cura and send to the printer? What do I do with the rar file contents? If anyone can help please let me know.

I have done this upgrade, and it works well. My only issue is feeding the filament into the extruder. It takes a lot of wiggling to get it into the bowden tube. I have started removing the tube from the top of the extruder to allow the filament to come through then reinsert the tube. Is anyone else having this issue? I also miss the manual winder from the old extruder.

Hi, does this update require a firmware update too ?
You know there are some improvements like mesh leveling but i feel ok with manual leveling so no urgent need for me except the new stepper motor needs a firmware update
