Croatoan Island, now known as Hatteras Island, holds a significant place in the history of the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke. The name "Croatoan" refers to both the island and a Native American tribe that inhabited it.

I saw something a while back where scientists took DNA from indigenous peoples in the area of where the colonists could have gone when they left Roanoke, who had the same last names as some of those colonists, as well as DNA from known descendants still in England and the samples had matching DNA. I just wish I could remember what it was that I was watching, because it was fascinating!

Another big clue is lack of clay pipes, the Roanoke colony was a time before clay pipes, every other site is loaded with clay pipes I find them everywhere but according to the archaeological survey it said their was a lack of clay pipes on these sites Imo they 100% found them .

Honestly, the greater mystery is not where they went, but why they left. We can assume supplies were taking to long to get back, but why they chose to go where they did is the mystery

They probably just moved with the indigenous ppl and left the message on the tree 🌴 that they were there, he just never went to check besides the times he tried and it stormed. So he decided to go back home!

Seems more likely that they stopped at site x first, realized it wasn’t a good location and moved to the Roanoke site, leaving behind some artifacts.

I live very close to where the site was & remember a few years back hearing about a genetics test which was being done using people who had certain surnames. Apparently someone was able to put enough information (including bloodlines) into place to hopefully get the research completed.

They got attacked by non-friendly natives, and then continue to move to the friendly natives, the Croatoans. Then interbred with them.

Pottery is one of the main sources of info that archaeologists use to study dead civilizations.

One should not date a site so much by what is found but what is not found. In any case, I found a Mercury dime while digging my garden. It is dated 1941. This does not prove my house was built in 1941. It only proves someone with a Mercury dime was on the property sometime after 1941. If I dig up an artifact from 1590 that does not prove the site was built in 1590. It proves that what was above that artifact was put there no earlier than 1590. It could just as easily have been put there in 1990. One needs to carefully apply logic when dating sites. So if an object that is virtually always found at archeological sites starting in 1600 is absent in a dig where lots of other objects are found that date to the 1590's then it is logical to conclude that the site was PROBABLY pre 1600 but it is not conclusive as there may be an alternative explanation. For example, the absence of clay pipes MAY indicate a specific date but it could also be a religious prohibition against tobacco. If pipes of other material are found then that would support the dating by use of clay pipes. But if no pipes or tobacco items are found at all then I would not rely on that alone as an indication of the age of the site.

Damn, even those in the 1600 were still fighting the anglo-chemical war on drugs?

That makes sense. Didn't know about the pottery find.

I don't understand how just finding their stuff means they are the ones who put it there. Anything those settlers brought across the ocean would have been extremely valuable to anyone over here. It would have been traded all over for high value. Some of their stuff was the equivalent of having alien technology.

They still have no idea what really happened to them.

So.. No, the answer to the opening question is no, it is not solved. A piece of pottery could have gotten there through any number of means. Perhaps it was an early site they considered but rejected? Perhaps the pottery was traded with natives and abandoned there? Perhaps it was pillaged from the colony site after the colony was abandoned? Or yeah, it could be signs of a family that survived. So we still have no clue.
