You should go much further back in time. Prior to the Qing Dynasty the official flag of each Chinese dynasty was simply the Chinese character of that dynasty’s name written in the most common official script of the time. This system goes back to at least as far back as the Zhou Dynasty 3000 years ago, with the character “Zhou” written in the ancient Seal Script.
