Why The Karl Anthony Towns Trade HAD To Happen...

The Karl Anthony-Towns trade shocked everyone… a deal that on paper made sense but COMPLETELY came out of nowhere.

And I’ve spent the last few days thinking… why did this deal happen and maybe even more importantly, why did it happen now?

Because typically, we kind of know when an NBA trade is in motion. Normally we get some rumors, there is a bit of momentum on a deal, SOMETHING that tells us something is up… but that didn’t happen this time.

And there are a few reasons for that.

The reason why this deal had to happen this week is because Knicks needed to sign DaQuan Jeffries, Charlie Brown Jr and Duane Washington during the offseason in order to use their salaries to balance out KAT's salaries. All of them got $1 above minimum salary as part of the move and a huge salary bump as a result. For example, Daquan Jeffries got 493K last year for multiple 10-day contracts and was looking at being waived or a two-way contract before getting 2.46M guaranteed money. You can say Knicks exploited a loophole in the CBA, but they didn't break any rule for sure. If they waited, they won't be able to do this trade until the next offseason or they'll have to give up more players, neither is a good option.

The Knicks needed a center with Mitchell Robinson's injury and the Wolves wanted financial flexibility.

Thanks for pointing out that Jalen Duren is an important piece to the pistons. I keep seeing all types of trade scenarios where teams just trade for Duren and most of the trades dont even make sense for the pistons. There are not alot of players at the center position with his upside and potential, pistons are not giving him up.

The real reason why nobody saw this coming is because real journalism has died. All these podcast creators barely have any sources. All the new media does is regurgitate any anonymous quotes they read on line. Yall speculate with no substance. Just guess and move the goal post when your wrong.

How can anyone question the deal and the timing of this deal. The Utah Jazz have a better package and have better extra players such as Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton. They have starting players in Walker Kessler, again Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen and John Collins.

Why not bring up Julius extension that him and the Knicks couldn’t agree to

It wasn't because the Wolves didn't see themselves as a real contender like the Celtics. It's ownership. They're in a messy sale right now, and no matter who wins, neither ownership groups wants to pay that second apron tax. Only historic franchises with huge fanbases world wide (Celtics, Knicks, Lakers) can afford to pay the second apron. Other teams are trying to avoid it.

The reason you didn't hear anything....Tim Connelly.

Rudy trade was the same way. D'Angelo Russell, same thing.

Tim's big trades have no leaks.

CP from Knicks Fan TV called this on July 9th. And now you hear about the Draft Day offer. They were ALWAYS going after KAT!! From day 1 of the Leon Rose era...

The Towns trade was a basketball decision.
Money wasn't anywhere near a financial decision. That's been proven to be true

If Randle plays at an All-NBA level towards the trade deadline, they should seriously consider trading him. You can't lose All-NBA level players for nothing

This trade is so funny to me because when the Wolves traded for Gobert to pair him with KAT the majority of talking heads and fans called that a terrible idea. Some went as far as to say this could be the worst trade of *all* time. Fast forward now a benefit to the Knicks trading for KAT is that they could pair him with.... Robinson a similar styled center to Gobert. Absolutely hilarious.

The apron is one of those things that's brand new to everyone. We're going to see more and more situations like this in the coming years.
