With a nominal carbon content of only point 20 %, it can be welded using proper procedure and can be heat treated to a hardness up to 30 Rc in sections 1/2 inch or less. It is often used in applications where parts are carburized to achieve a high hardness wear resistant surface while maintaining toughness in the core.
