This was incredibly sweet. Joey’s mural was vandalized and Pacey went out of his way to support her. Remember she had a boyfriend at the time, AJ, and Pacey tells Jen previously his crush had passed the point of no return, and it’s painful for him to watch from the sidelines- aka being “Ducky” from Pretty in Pink. He has to make a choice to continue being her friend and supporting her, despite his own heartbreak, which is what this whole scene is about.

Out of context, Pacey gifting Joey a wall would be weird and nonsensical. IN context, however, it's his way of encouraging her, and supporting her dreams. Can you say "Best Boyfriend ever?!" 😍💘👫

Too bad she never painted it. So the one who rented the wall for her painted a message of love for himself.

it is a sweet we see later that Pacey spent all his time and focus on joey - and he proceeded to neglect his studies and ultimately felt like a loser and then the romance fell apart when the bill came due. Romance has a price, you got to pay for it someday.

A little manipulative Pacey. He plays the best friend, the confidant who motivates Joey, just to be able to seduce her. He hides his true feelings like a tactician. The action is beautiful (renting a wall to her, he tells her "Paint your future", just like Gwen said) but the intention is doubtful. Pacey is usually more outspoken and less calculating.
