Mass power outages, flooding, and the closures of both motorways and beaches are reported in California as a rare winter storm sweeps the US state.

After days of high winds, more than 120,00 people, many of whom live in the Los Angeles area, are without power.

The storm, which is due to weaken, is one of the strongest to hit the state in decades.

I live in Canada so I know how to drive in crappy conditions, including massive snowstorms. If you aren’t prepared for it, it’s devastating & dangerous.

As a person from the Midwest, I do deeply wish I had their enthusiasm for winters cold embrace😔

Given the droughts over the past couple of years, this is a Godsend for Southern California.

They rely on the snow melt from the Sierra Mountains for their water supply. The snow has been heavier there.

It's absolutely insane. I live in West Los Angeles/Santa Monica and over the last 2 days I think it stopped raining for maybe a total of 4 hours (it did finally taper off today though and it's not raining now). We got some hail on Friday for about an hour which is extremely rare for us. I've only seen it hail down here by my house maybe 3 times in the last decade.

It's just some wintery weather. No need to panic.

Snow looks so picturesque, but it is horrible after about twenty minutes of the reality of it...

Snow in the San Bernadino mountains is definitely a once in a decade scene! But in general this is the rainy season and the problem with the extreme weather in California is we bake and then when the rains come the water does not saturate into the ground but flood and wash into the rivers.

Hope all stay safe.

As a SoCal native, I’m enjoying* the rain and cold weather. The mountains are covered with snow and the hills are green as tits. Beats having to look at a brown, ugly desert landscape that is Riverside county.

It snows in Southern California but usually at 3000 to 5000 ft. But went down to 1200 ft. Most people live 800ft or lower though. It had an atmospheric tropical rain train with cold air thus super rain and snow.

I’m from Bakersfield, California, I understand what’s going on but the snow helps the crops grow here in the long run, it’s amazing and I hope it keeps coming!!!
