The biggest change (besides in the 70s) was definitely 1984, which is actually confirmed as the year Garfield started standing up on a regular basis. You can see his 1984 appearance changed his body proportions quite a lot. That’s because the creator of Peanuts taught Jim Davis how to design a character more physically suitable for slapstick humor, which involved much bigger feet.

Garfield stood up before 1984, but it was very occasional and his feet were very small when doing it.
