1:07:26 “And it wasn’t that I stopped hearing God’s voice. Sometimes I think I do hear God’s voice, but it’s not coming from one of the houses, it’s, like, coming from over the ridge or in the river or in the wind.”

Please keep doing these episodes every year. They mean so much to me. :)

"They told me why I left the house."

This exact reaction to your initial story, as well as my Christian circles' reactions to other instances of deconstruction, was one of the final reason I lost trust in voices arguing against deconstruction. It became so clear they were fighting to maintain a position, not to engage with reality.

First time tuning in. I love how the dude on the right lets the dude on the left talk. It’s actually incredible. Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is listen.

"My deconstruction was not necessarily a deconstruction of God, but a deconstruction of my telescope. " I love this analogy.

These deconstruction episodes have helped me every year since 2020. I really connected with this one. Thank you!

The Bigfoot analogy really struck me. I’ve been watching a lot of Mormon stories recently and noticed that pattern as well- it seems to almost always be the people who dive so far into the pool that they hit their head on bottom. So many stories of people who researched their way right out of the faith, while their spouses who by all accounts were less devout or intense are left behind still believing.

Hey Rhett - have you ever considered writing a book? You and Link’s experiences with Evangelical Christianity are so interesting and unique, and I think it would make for such a great written work. No pressure, of course, would just love to hypothetically experience more of your thoughts and perspectives through a more academic avenue.

Looking forward for Link’s part for next week, love y’all!

I appreciate this so much. I was taught that leaving the church would lead to a miserable lonely existence. Thankfully, my experience has opened so many doors to so many different kinds of people and I find many of the most "Christ-like" people are not Christian at all.

“Let’s just keep walking around and helping each other” well said my man. I’m thankful for you guys continuing on this journey as we go along in life 😊

I hope more people start to see the lie of “you were never a believer” or “you just want to sin.” It’s the worst kind of bearing false witness that believers can do.

I love these episodes. They're helping people heal, truly. It's not talked enough about.

Once again, Rhett explains it so well! I never forgot the phrase he chose to describe himself (in what I think was the first spiritual deconstruction episode), "a hopeful agnostic". It's been the way I now put it whenever I'm asked, or when I just think about it. I think it sums it up nicely.

My parents are making a lot of progress in accepting that I’m no longer a Christian! Around Christmas time, my mom asked me if I would be comfortable going to church. And accepted “no” as my answer! It felt good to be able to enforce that boundary and have it be respected.

Dang, Rhett, by the end you had me sobbing! That was really beautiful. A house only serves to determine who belongs and who doesn't. So well said. You're really a natural speaker. Thank you guys for doing these every year! I always look forward to them.

Yeah, I remember being in the house all those years ago. One of the funny things about it is, at least in some of those rooms, if you had a problem that wasn't easily fixed by prayer and discipline and you couldn't seem to get in line with the thinking of everyone else in the house, they didn't like you there. If Rhett was in the house attic, I was quietly tucked away in the basement. What a lonely place that house was.

I'm so glad to be out. I still have my struggles, but at least there are options for me. At least there is help beyond "pray and try harder."

Raised by a pastor in the evangelical community and I was hard core also. You are so right in the thought that because we were so deep in the belief, we were easily able to find numerous errors in all the teachings. I think it is especially difficult for those of us who are lifelong students and constantly asking questions. When we get the answer “just because” without definitive support we are only going to dig more for answers. My husband was raised similarly, and he is now a Deist. I am still spiritual myself but like you I am still working to find my full belief. We can know innately what is morally right and religion does not make me morally better and evangelizing my beliefs on others is just wrong. I wish you the best as you continue your journey.

The best thing about his journey, is that his best friend, his significant other, and his family are there to support him.
I have seen deconstructions tear marriages and families apart.
Rhett is a lucky guy to be able to explore these ideas and have the people close to him support him.
Thanks for sharing!

As someone who’s never been in the house, I’ve seen its walls from the outside. I’ve met its people. I’ve never heard someone who has left the house and resonated so much where I stand. Phenomenal exploration and explanation. Love love love this continued conversation. Rhett we share the same gardens on occasion, but I’m happy to keep exploring in the same. Sending you guys love, adventure, joy, and harmony. 💜

I have severe trauma and always dip out when people start throwing around religion.

So it's super nice to have my all time favorite channel talk about deconstruction... sometimes I feel alone in my trauma
