i think people misunderstand this as a sort of hard and fast rule, when i. reality a lot of times it can come down to personal word choice and how you yourself want to come across. ですます forms can be “polite, ” and sometimes people want to speak politely even if they’re talking to their friends! it’s not like japanese people are working a flowchart in their mind of the exact level of formality they want to use; maybe, they just find it more “elegant, ” or “classy” to speak in a more polite/formal way and that’s the sort of word choices they would use. i think of it sometimes like how cursing is used in English speaking countries; some people don’t curse at all, even with their closest friends who would never be offended by cursing, just because they personally don’t want to speak like that. on the other hand, some people don’t care at all and curse freely with anyone they are speaking to.

Even though I'm just a beginner learner, maybe it's just me, but the example sentence already sounded, like, halfway informal to me. I'm pretty sure they dropped a particle after the 次, And the overall tone of it sounded less formal to me.
