IBM Scientists Achieve Storage Memory Breakthrough

For the first time, scientists at IBM Research have demonstrated reliably storing 3 bits of data per cell and retaining the information at elevated temperatures using a relatively new memory technology, known as phase-change memory (PCM).

This research breakthrough advances the development of a faster and more durable memory technology for applications including mobile phones, the Internet of Things and enterprise cloud data storage.

Both fascinating and promising. Dr Pozidis' explanation was clear, concise, and easy to follow. This is one of the more promising memory technologies I have observed.

A truly universal memory standard has massive potential across an incredible number of industries. I believe powerfully this could be as disruptive to our current base as the transistor. Excellent explanation and description, Dr. Pozidis. To think this is as close as a few years away is beyond exciting.

All "things" (Information and Entertainment) Digital and Infinite Storage should be a priority of the best information technology companies.

Technology never ceases to amaze me. One day i will be able to store multiple virtual reality porn videos at full resolution on my hard drive and still have enough space left over for some video games.

Google translation and voice to text needs LONG time to go to have a significant improvement !
A sample (at 5:25) of voice to English text in this video : "... stall information through its Brazil and retrieve it over and over ten days after.." ! ;-)

Haris Pozidis, you are Greek, aren't you? :-)
Ευχαριστώ. Thank you for the nice presentation.

Congrats! I got sick of Flash and all it's broken promises, and for the still high price it carries, and I'm just an average consumer with personal use needs, not some big storage enterprise. I probably wouldn't even care if PCM is a bit pricier than Flash. If it's as fast as DRAM and lasts as long as Flash without all the borked controller problems and firmware patches for performance/stability issues that Flash has, that's all I can ask for.

Isn't memristor-based memory going to make this technology obsolete in the next few years though?

oh god dammit! A discovery and development, as important and exciting, yet as complex and difficult to understand as THIS, and it's being explained by someone....who I find I can hardly even begin to understand a word the dude's saying. FUK. I have to find another video of someone without a heavy accent, explaining it; i can only hope it's find-able somewhere else with someone explaining it with no heavy luck, i need luck right NOW lol
