Lathe accident (please activate subtitles)

I've been working with lathes for decades, I know every screw, I'm humble, I'm an old hand - like many of you. This happened to me when I wanted to do it fast - a simple, tiny adapter.
There was no air and no blood. And i was so stuck in the machine that i couldn't see the gearbox.
The scarf or my neck brought the machine to a standstill but did not switch it off. So i had to blindly find the idle position of the gearbox in order to be able to unscrew the scarf.
A stronger lathe would simple rip off the head, I think.

My college's machine shop has a sign on one of the lathes "Not only will this kill you, it will hurt the whole time you're dying" I'm glad you escaped with your life.

This was literally the best outcome possible- got to leave with his life and a lesson. This video could have just as easily had a Liveleak watermark

My teacher told us to never never ever wear gloves, scarf, long sleaves ( better working in shirt (tshirt)) never wear long saggy clothes ... always check twice everything so you do not get hurt ..

It is a wise man who can learn by observation and not make his own painful reminders.

I think most machinists should know to not wear a scarf, but thank you for the reminder. Good thing that the Drehbank didn't pull you in entirely. I respect that you shared this, it could save someone's life. Stay safe over there.

lathes are one of the most dangerous machines.

You are lucky to be able to talk about this accident, most people would have faired much worse.

No subtitles required as soon as you showed that scarf. Dangly bits and machinery never end well.

Having worked with lathes over many years this video makes me both sad and happy, sad you got hurt and happy you lived to talk about it. BE SAFE!!!

Thank you, as humbling as this accident was I've no doubt you just help prevent it from happening to someone else. The pictures really drive the point home!

When you work machinery so often, it begins to seem routine.... I know I've made mistakes like that.

Thanks for reminding me again! I probably needed it. :)

This video should be mandatory to watch for every budding machinist.
I have huge respect for lathes, precisely because they can maim or kill you in a heartbeat. It is also a sobering reminder that even an old hand as yourself is not immune to making mistakes. This video, together with Adam Savage‘s video on his lathe accident (which could easily have cost him a finger or two, possibly his hand) are proof.
Thank you for sharing this, Wolfgang.

Was a guy at work, do some homework on the lathe.Polishing a shaft he had made with emery cloth/wet or dry.
But he had the lathe turning clockwise, they normally turn anti clockwise.
Paper grabbed, his hand closed, it pulled him over and ripped his fingers off!

These kind of things are always in my mind when I work with machinery. Mistakes can happen to the best of us, we people are not always at their best. Glad you are still here, ik hope everything is well now!

thank god ... no more serious injuries
always shirt inside the pants and shirt sleeve rolled up or sleeve with elastic whenever we work with rotating machines
Safety first
thanks for saying

Thanks for the reminder. In very cold weathers scarf is a lifesaver, as a lot of body heat escapes around the neck. After one and a half turn around the neck, I tuck the ends under my clothes so they don't swing around. But best practice is to avoid them.

Thanks for sharing your story Wolfgang! New operators need to see this stuff.

Wow, hope you recovered quickly. While working on a lathe or any turning machine, teachers always tell us to not wear loose clothing, long hair must be tied up, gloves must fit you well and most importantly... no scarfs :)
