I saw this production in its first season at the Metropolitan Opera in 1972 and have never forgotten it. Leonard Bernstein conducted a tautly dramatic and thrilling rendition of the original Opera Comique version of the score, and from the Overture to the final devastating curtain, nothing in the piece was taken for granted or left unexamined. Every moment was motivated and handled with loving care, as though Bernstein had the same proprietary regard for the sheer achievement of the work as Bizet himself. Don Jose was given the weight of a tragic hero, turning him from a victim into an instigator in his own right, governed and destroyed by the same destructive forces as Carmen. Alvin Ailey's choreography at the beginning of the second act mirrored the intensity of Bernstein's slow build, until the music and dancing gave a heady sense of losing control without actually doing so. This production set the bar at a very high level, and in all the years since, no other has matched its intelligence and integrity or its degree of respect for the material. It was the perfect example of how a creative team can make all the right choices, and in the process, rediscover the original alchemy that transformed Bizet's inspired work into a classic.

To this very day this is the best recording of Carmen in my opinion. Bernstein brings his unique pacing to it. The artists are absolutely splendid.
