Artificial Life. The battle of clans

A new version of “Artificial Life” for modeling Evolution.
A made-up world with made-up rules inhabited by cells with a genome and the ability to give birth to other cells.
Sometimes mutation occurs and one random digit in the genome changes to another. And then natural selection comes into play…

The script was written based on the results of the simulation, so the story could have been very different.

In the video, emphasis is placed on the “socio-political” interactions of the organisms. To achieve this type of interaction, the organisms were divided into clans.
Although there really isn't any interaction here (there are no built-in opportunities for interaction and recognition of one’s own species), the general development of the world creates such an impression.

I love how sector 1 went from basically vegan monks with no waste pollution to hardened cannibals that kill on sight.

Incredible how clans 1 and 5 formed a symbiotic relationship with one another. No wonder they won.

I think it’s good to note that clan 5, which coevolved with clan 1, evolved a highly mobile, almost serpentine growth form, which likely reduced the impact the predators had on it, most other clans produced more typical plants that could be more easily swarmed and consumed.

It would be interesting if there were mechanics for communication (even something as simple as a cell being on and off, while other organisms can read that and it changes things) and the ability to have personal relationships or status.

The incredible part about this video is that it's almost designed to be watched twice because knowing the end result makes the second watch through just as entertaining. Great content!

I like that clans 1 and 5's symbiotic relationship is similar to that between ravens and wolves. 5 (the Raven) searched for prey in other sectors, bringing 1 (the Wolf) and having it take out prey so it can settle in and feed on the remains (organic waste)

The idea about worlds without a certain kind of predator being especially vulnerable to worlds which adapted with them is a very interesting concept.

Also, might I suggest plants in your office?

One of the coolest simulated evolution demo's I've seen!

I like the very distinct speciation between the clans that occurred early on, showing how isolation and initial conditions were so important to the simulation. Maybe we need a repeat of this experiment.

I picked clan 1, because their lifestyle was visibly extremely different to the others'. Something unique but successful is very difficult to prepare for, so everyone is vulnerable.

Very cool, I love these emerging systems. Can't wait for your next videos.

I love the narration!
I think it's interesting that in the final epoch, ones things somewhat reached a stable ecosystem, we can see a few distinct species that are capable of surviving together. Meanwhile, many species which existed early on, before the presence of single-celled predators, are nowhere to be found. Early on we see a lot of creatures that grow rapidly and cover all available space, while in the final epoch, we see many "snake-like" species that grow in a straight line and only occasionally turn or branch.

I wonder if a similar phenomenon happened in Earth's evolutionary history. Perhaps during the "Great Oxygenation Event" when the first oxygen-producing organisms evolved and nearly killed all life on Earth.

See this here is precisely why in extremely careful who I allow near me, even going to the supermarket is a big no no these days. Everything is about energy.

I picked 5/teal, I thought it looked like a good medium between all of them, looking both expansive, yet stable. Happy to see they won

Really interesting that the 5th clan, which has first exposure to the predator, was able to 'hitch a ride' with it and use it to colonize other sectors.

I never thought I could feel the same tension and excitement as I do when watching a movie, just by watching weird dots move

This is amazing.

Btw, I see the "unicellular predators" less of an immune system, and more of a bacterial system (since there's good bacteria). The bacteria in our gut helps break down molecules so we can use the stored energy.

But then, when an unfamiliar bad virus or bacteria comes along that we're not used to, it can wipe an entire people (like the Native Americans and smallpox).

That was so satisfying to watch. Stuff like this is why I'd like to get more involved with coding so I can make stuff like this for enjoyment. The music really added to how mesmerising the visuals were as well.

You need to bring this to a bigger scale. Something crazy like 2^14 x 2^14 (16384 x 16384), and if your computer can't handle that, then try to turn this program into something that runs on your GPU. I would also love to see you give different species names, and write a little program that makes a chart of how they evolve, or just a table of how they evolved and you turn that into a chart. Then we could see what exactly happened as far as evolution is concerned, and as you would go through the events that took place on the massive grid like you did in this video, you would keeping referencing back to that evolution diagram to show how the evolutionary pressures made the different species evolve into others.
