Farm and Garden Updates: July (and weeds) Edition

Every two months or so we like to do a farm and garden update with a casual tour. And July is a beast in the south, but we are gunning for the fall with high hopes of a rich fall garden with loads of greens. Edible ones. Not weeds. Thanks.

Hey all that read these blurbs! July is such a bizarre month here. I never feel as though the garden is as full as it should be and yet, here we are with loads of veggies. And yes, I have not idea how to work the new drone. Anyway, CLICK ALL THE LINKS!

Almost a 4-year old video, and not one comment about N Sync No Strings Attached CD hanging @6:11. Hope you got some good use out of that album, Farmer Jesse. Bangers for sure.

jessie.. if you put your beds downhill you would still have erosion. it would just be in your walkways for the most part.

What about a wheel hoe made from an old bicycle for the path maintenance?

Try wood ash for those green shoulders my friend. Potassium and calcium carbonate have helped us in the past. I've been told that extreme heat can also be the culprit and it sounds like you've had some of that.

Thought I'd let you know I've had good luck priming the spinach and cilantro. I just start it soaking the day before and dry it with fans while I'm preparing beds. It's been fun to experiment.

I'm glad you're dug out, I just got out of the strawberry wormhole and I'll be needing a good shovel.

Hi Jessy. If you orient your beds downslope, you might just be creating a new erosion problem, and possibly a worse one. I suspect the water would start to create rills in the walkways between beds and would start to eat into the beds over time. Is there anything you can do to make the walkways a bit more permeable to rainwater? Scratching the surface of the tram lines in a conventional arable system with some sort of harrow tine or shallow chisel plow has been shown to improve infiltration of rainwater.

I thought the old timers used cassettes?

LOL, Oldtimers use CDs? I don't consider myself to be old at 40, but I'm pretty sure it's still considered unconventional where I come from. Not to say I remember it being a new thing, so I guess you could say I AM old. LOL

Some thoughts I had about your erosion issues. What about deeper paths with more mulch, more swale-like with a planned overflow area. Seems like the paths are a good opportunity to slow and sink the rivulets that were forming.

Rough year for weeds up here (Cincinnati-ish) - the Hundred Days Of Rain didn't allow proper or regular cultivation ... or even sufficient time between floods to go out and hand-weed the mess. There's only one of me so "digging out" on all of it wasn't an option. For the first time in a time, I gave up and abandoned some plots. Nuke and pave. Wipe out and start over. Mow. Tarp. Wait it out. Leaving the tarps on 'til Spring ...
