As someone in HR for over 15 years, I can concur that any MLM "work experience" is not considered actual experience. And if you are applying for a skilled position, it will actually hurt your chances.

"Sometimes that happens when we don't take care of ourselves" - that is the worst thing I've ever heard someone say to a pregnant person. After a miscarriage a person is usually already feeling guilty thinking it was caused by something they did. This is why the first thing a medical professional typically says is "this wasn't your fault." To outright insinuate that her miscarriage had anything to do with her eating patterns or weight is so terrible. I can't even fully express how angry that made me.

I actually feel as though being in an MLM is WORSE than having a gap/unemployment in your resume for exactly the reasons they listed. Shows a lack of critical thinking skills, irresponsible, etc. I think an employer would rather have someone who “took a few years off” than someone who was in a pyramid scheme.

As a supervisor for >25 years, MLMs listed on resumes were definitely a red flag for a number of reasons:

1. Participation in an MLM can indicate poor judgement
2. Participation in an MLM can mean that the applicant has wasted time when they could have been doing better things to advance their career in our field
3. There is a risk that an applicant currently involved in an MLM will bring that crap into our office and pester co-workers and our clients

We didn't deal with financial issues, so unlike the horror story in this episode, it wasn't an automatic trip to the circular file, but seeing that on a resume would make me rate the resume lower than I might have otherwise.

Ooh isagenix unlocks some memories- a local it works team moved over to them and their tag line was “It actually works!” The shade 😂

I have said this before - we need to stop being polite to rude people. That hun that was insulting and offensive to the pregnant woman needs to be put on blast. I don’t often think blasting someone is appropriate but this is one case when it is.

I'm still working on my horror story email, but I grew up with my parents in Amway. And I was TOTALLY groomed into wanting to be in "the business" and wanted to sign up as soon as I turned 16 (which was allowed if we had someone over 18 signed up with us). It sickens me looking back.

omg this video made me call my mom & check in on her pro-mlm status & it's been years of discussions, but she's unofficially anti-mlm!! a prior member of amway and long time supporter of all friends in schemes, she finally sees how predatory they are and searches for alternative products to the ones she used to source from mlms.

Also the hiring manager would have to consider the possibility that the candidate would join another mlm or still in their mlm. I wouldn't want to bring that energy into my office.

As an optometrist this is absolutely horrifying to me. I can’t even imagine thinking it’s acceptable OR appropriate to make a sales pitch to your patients. So gross and inappropriate. This is what makes people lose their trust in their health care providers. I’m so sorry to the writer of that story and I hope she never has that experience again 😭😭😭

Regarding resumes (not MLM related): I use to have to go through applicant resumes for a very large Canadian insurance company. I wad told, "the second you find a spelling or grammar error, toss it." QUADRUPLE CHECK YOUR SPELLING AND GRAMMAR! Good companies are very picky about resumes.

My aunt is very into MLMs, and I was at lunch with my my aunts, mom & grandma when she said something about a new weight loss product she found and I was like “I swear if this is an MLM, I will lay it all out right the heck now” and she looked at me very hatefully!! She’s always tried to get my mom and their sisters into MLMs when the only reason SHE is able to do that stuff is bc she hasn’t had to work a day since she married a multimillionaire 25 years ago. Especially the weight loss ones bc she’s had 3 weight loss surgeries I also lived with her for a few weeks before I was placed into a group home (bc she couldn’t “handle me” aka the oils weren’t working lol), and she tried to use Young Living to heal my mental health issues…and sent me away when I wasn’t getting better. She kept my sister. We were separated for years

Edit: turned out to not be an MLM so all that happened was a mean look 😂

Re: MLMs on resumes

Like you said in the video, if someone gets caught in an MLM for a lengthy period of time but eventually gets out, they now have a gap on their resume.

So that person now has to decide between:
a) Having a big gap on their resume, which will likely to be a major red flag for employers and could lead to some hiring managers throwing their resume in the trash
OR
b) Listing their MLM experience, which could also be a major red flag for employers and could lead to some hiring mangers throwing their resume in the trash.

For that reason, I'm not a fan of the whole "if I see an MLM on a resume, it automatically goes in the trash" thing.

Yes, if there's no end date on the listing or the listing claims that they were a "CEO" or "business owner" or uses the MLM's weird language, that's definitely a red flag! But if there's a clear end date and the person isn't misrepresenting what they did in the MLM, I think it's worth keeping that person in consideration and asking about their MLM experience at the interview.

At the end of the day, we all want people in MLMs to get out of them, right? If so, ex-distributors need to be able to find employment outside of the MLM world. Automatically throwing their resumes in the trash just because they list their MLM experience isn't going to accomplish that.

I missed out on a job promotion because an applicant off the street was hired because she had sales experience and I didn't. Eventually I found out her sales experience was Avon!!!
( I do know her aunt worked for the company so that was probably the real reason she was chosen over me)

OMG, my optometrist ALSO tried to pitch her MLM. Only hers was Rodan and Fields. She noticed my acne and took that as an opportunity to pitch her products. Thankfully, she wasn't pushy when I said no, I already had products that were helping.

Nutritionists technically don't need to have any qualifications to call themselves as such:

"Depending on the state in which you practice, you can call yourself a nutritionist without any formal nutrition education, training, licensing or certification, but it’s illegal to call yourself a dietitian without proper credentialing."

as someone who has lost a baby myself, if I EVER get a message like that, I will post screenshots of it on every social media possible with the MLM hun tagged so everyone can see what a trash person they are. absolutely not. that makes me furious and my heart goes out to the lady in the story. I pray all is going well with her pregnancy ❤️

As a competitive figure skater of 20 years, I can totally believe that Isogenix dude just had tons of clients in a rink. Especially 10 years ago, figure skating is in many ways wildly unregulated but usually an extremely large part of skaters’ lives. I had coaches with no actual personal training or nutrition certifications make us do extreme off ice conditioning and push disordered eating practices on us as early as 9 years old. I am so relieved that the figure skater in your story didn’t have her relationship with food ruined by this Isogenix distributor considering that most skaters I have grown up with, MLMs or not, have had to grow out of horrific relationships with food and exercise.

MLM on a CV is definitely a red flag. It’s a shame that people are duped into thinking it’s work experience, buts it’s simply not. They’re not in a workplace, working towards anything.

Thank you for doing Isagenix! My grandparents were in that company for almost 20 years before jumping to a new, younger MLM. It’s hard to listen to them talk about it and being anti-MLM at the same time. To save arguing, we just don’t talk about it. Thank you for all that you do!
