How I Became The Bomb - Ulay, Oh - Love Never Dies

Artist Marina Abramovic was immersed in a performance art piece where she sits with a stranger in silence for one minute while directly looking at one another

Thirty years ago Marina was involved in an intense love affair with an artist named Ulay. They lived in a van together doing performances. When they decided to separate, they walked the Great Wall of China, meeting in the middle. They embraced one last time, then turned around and never saw each other again.

Until the day Marina performed her latest piece, sitting opposite a stranger for a minute.

Ulay showed up as a stranger. Marina had no idea he was there and it wasn’t until she lifted her head to face, whom she thought would be just a random person, that she realized it was Ulay. The powerful emotion that comes over her is incredible. Ulay leaves after the minute is up and she is barely able to carry on the performance. Incredibly moving.

You could tell when she opened her eyes and saw the stranger following Ulay that she wished he had still been sitting there. Truly heartbreaking. If there is love why not just stay. I’ll never understand why people let so many things pull them apart.

I've been watching this video periodically for a couple of years now. It wasn't until this last time I watched, did I see the culmination of their performance art both together and individually in the grand masterpiece neither could create on their own. He created a look in her eyes that is so universally human while at the same time deeply personal to the two of them. He will live forever in the look she gave him, that we are lucky to share in.

when he gets up and walks away.. my heart breaks for them. life sucks when you have to let go of someone you love but it sucks even more knowing that neither of you ever moved on.. and can still have to leave someone in the same way you did before, unknowing when you'll have the chance to see them again and make things right.

The saddest thing is the flicker in her eye, after he left, hoping that he was still there instead of a replacement. True love is so prominent.

Everyone has someone like this in their life. It wasn’t in the cards for us, but the love is still there. She has someone in her life now and I have someone else also. Ran into her a couple times, the feelings just all come back. After a hi and hello, we just hug and say goodbye.
