How to create a white background and get rid of the black bars at the side of videos taken on mobile phones.

You need to change the 'Video Overlay Settings' (top right of the playback window - looks like a square on top of a square) and select 'Green/Blue Screen'

Also, its important to add the background first!! I was struggling but this solved it.

What if you’ve already edited the video?? I tried putting the white on the bottom but it will just go right back up to the top if that makes any sense.

it didn't work for me either for ages, I realised that if I reimport an imovie video to edit it wont change.. but if i import the original iphone version it does.... strange 😬
