This video is in response to a recent question on my channel from a viewer who is just starting a movie physical media question and who wanted some comments on DVDs and choosing one format over another.
These are just some of my thoughts on things to think about in 2024 when it comes to what’s available on digital and streaming formats as well as methods of collecting.
I hope it is of interest. Thanks for watching

Starting a dvd and bluray collection these days will be much harder than it was 20 years ago. We used to find them everywhere as late as 2020. but since then, many places that sell them phased them out and your best bet in finding them is in thrift stores, flea markets, ebay, or amazon.

Hi Neil, That was an absolutely fantastic video to watch. You are so right about all the things you have to consider before collecting lots of videos. I feel that DVD's are the best because more rare and unusual titles are put on DVD. But I even like VHS still, because I have so many of them. Having room is definitely an issue too.I really enjoyed your video, it was very informative! So thank you.

Hello Neil really interesting listening thanks. Actually since watching your channel I've found my dvd interest rekindled somewhat and have decided to show any I pick up alongside bluray and 4k I get. I do enjoy once a week going around our local charity shops and seeing what I can find.

A lot of good advice here, Neil. I know the feeling of being overwhelmed with so much "stuff" around and so many choices of things to watch or read or listen to on the stereo. The habit of collecting can be frustrating and draining in some ways. But, as you said, it's necessary to try and stay focused on what you yourself consider to be important. For me, living in a modest sized house, space is a big concern and I have limitations on how much of a movie room I can set up. The paper sleeve idea is a good one and I've considered doing that someday. As for the big push toward 4K, you and I have already talked about that. I am still happy with DVDs and they will always make up the bulk of my collection.

Amicus productions were big in the 60s and 70s, but some of their movies like Danger Route 1967 have never been on disc.

There is one thing I hate about my collecting habit.
If I own the single dvd and come across a director's cut or double feature with bonus material I'd buy them also.
It comes really a problem for me when I stuble upon a special edition Steel Box edition .. so now I have the same movie on the same format three times.
Then This movie pops up without searching on Blue Ray .. that makes a fourth copy of that same movie in my home.

And I'm a sucker for keeping stuff .. I just can;t get rid of things I'd like.

Great video..I have the same outlook as you..I don’t have a lot of space and use folders to keep my collection.I use a app so ti still have the photos of packaging etc..I watch a wide verity of films.I mostly buy dvds and Blu rays..I’ll wait 10 years and pick up the 4ks for next to nothing

I just got Indicators Columbia Horror box set. Some movies like Cry of the Werewolf on blu ray are not on public domain anymore.

Interesting watch this one matey.. first time viewer to your channel so have dropped you a sub 😎👍

I'm back collecting physical media again after trying to go digital only for a couple of years and hated every minute of it lol. Anyway I've been back collecting since the start of this year and popping up videos on my YouTube channel for it..

Looking forward to catching up on some of your previous videos next 😎👍

All good points mate.
The places of finding physical media especially movies where I’m located is getting a battle but I do occasionally pick up the odd movie from time to time. The other day at Vinies I found two good DVDs for a buck each, Ken Park and Bad Company in concert that was awesome .I too am hitting the 4000 mark.I love ally different and wonderful and obscure films and that makes it harder to find them out in the wild.I still occasionally head to eBay for DVDs sometimes.I do try to sick with Blu ray thoe but the movies I like are always oop and cost an arm and leg on Blu ray at times.

Hi Neil, My comments to your video keeps disappearing. I didn't write anything that was questionable. But I had justsaid that I really loved this informative video. And you are right about all the things to consider with having a collection . DVD's are great because more rare titles seem available on DVD. Thank you for a very informative video.

DVD is still a great format, just don't go above a 65 inch TV and make sure you have a player that upscales well, I have a Toshiba HD-A30 HD DVD player and it's fantastic at upscaling DVD. Sometimes I'd argue DVD is the better format, the Blu Ray transfer of "Predator" is notoriously bad so I prefer the DVD, also "Labyrinth" on Superbit DVD is amazing, it looks great but still hides a bit of the movies age (you can literally see puppet strings on the blu ray) and has DTS 5.1 audio.

Hi Neil, excellent advice mate, I often pop to charity shops and market stalls (stopping for a coffee along the way) and even if you don’t find anything worth picking up, it’s still an enjoyable experience. (the hunt is the best thing) I have OCD issues and mixing formats drives me crazy, it’s all or nothing with me (much to my own annoyance) DVD is a great format and like you I had thousands of titles before switching over completely to blu-ray. Plus DVD’s have so many more titles available. I often watch films alone Neil as the wife likes mainstream films only, (I would also add, a collection can take years to accumulate but remember, we all started with one film) nice one mate. Take care👍😃👍

Hi Neil I do buy dvds still. Mostly of old classic movies. I dont need those on blu ray I find the quality good enough for those. My local market stocks quite a few classic movies so I like to pick two or three up every month. I can pick up a dvd for two or three quid.

Format never mattered for me I still watch VHS but I am a sucker for a premium set never understood the slip cover die hardship but a rigid hard box all day. Indicator and Imprint are very underrated. Oh the days of being able to discover something new by way of video rental stores .
