What is a VPS (Virtual Private Server)

A VPS also known as a (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual machine provided by a web hosting company.

A VPS runs its own operating system (OS) and provides admin rights and root access so that you can install any required software.

You have more control with a virtual server.

With a virtual server you have your own resources, you are not sharing with other users as it would happen if you wer on a shared hosting service.

If you requirements grow you easily scale up to increase CPU, memory or disk space.

Can you run different os' on a shared hosting server? I'm guessing no, but its a little confusing when you specifically state that you can't have more than one os on a dedicated server and don't mention the os configuration on a shared server. By making specific reference to it when discussing a dedicated server it suggests you can have different os' on a shared server but that doesn't really make any sense.

Very interesting. No I know that there's a name for what I was doing here in New Zealand in host software the very early days of the Net--1984 (MicroNet). I just called it multiple soft machines running in a physical machine. But VPS is much shorter...

I am working on some freelancer websites, but they those sites could track VPN, so I guess VPS would work perfectly. All I need is the US IP address and need the virtual server just for web browsing to do my work.

So, just for Google browsing, I need VPS but multiple IP addresses so that even my friends can work. Is there any way that I get multiple unique IP addresses by purchasing one VPS?
