River Knife? - Schrade WR3 Water Rat Dive Knife

A dive knife can be a good choice even if you are not a scuba diver or skin diver. A river knife can come in handy for whitewater rafting or kayaking. I just wish the sheath on this one was better because the knife is pretty good.

Just received one of these about a week ago. Gave it a try on my last dive. Definatly does not float. But because of the bright green handle it does make it easy to find on the bottom. And the line cutter does work okay for fishing net and line. Cheers from Canada!

Thanks for the warning about the sheath. Blunt tip is also a prybar.

I have a Gerber river shorty. It's decent (for a Gerber) and I keep it strapped to my kayaking vest just in case.

I have always been attracted to diving knives even though they honestly have no use to me, they just look cool, i normally use them for throwing knives though lol

Sounds like we have the same luck with wedding bands. Fixing to be on my 4th. Great review. I'm not a diver either, so I'd probably sharpen the end to make a chisel tip on that blade. Should work ok for carving. Thanks for the review Bryan.

Not a diver, but I have 2 of this type for anytime I am around any water except a swimming pool. I'm sure that GA is like SC in river currents and snag potential . Your other comment by a follower is spot on in regards to the use of the notch on fishing line and netting . OMT, the tip is flat to add a safety factor while around inflatables and also facilitates prying/digging. I will have one on next weekend in Florida tubing the Itchneetucknee (?) River.

Good looking Dive Knife. I can see it being useful for a diver but not so much for anyone else.

My Dive Knife is a blunt tip like this one but it has no serrations. It works well for what I need.

Fun dive fact for you Bryan, from a guy who's been diving most his life: you lose color vision the deeper you go in the order it appears in the color spectrum. The bright green will look almost white at around 30-40 feet without a special filter on your mask...

The line cutter is for line that you might encounter while under water such as fishing line or light cord.

I'm a diver and Randy Yeager is right serration are for wet cable like a Net, the endatation is fishing line cutter. Old style and large in today's standard. Not a bad iteration but not a reliable sheath nontheless. Is that pummel working at all or is it synthetic.

Bryan, it's the cold water that shrinks your finger and the ring falls right off. I at one time worked for a tubing co. In Az. Happened all the time. Then people ( not the people who encured the loss) will take metal detectors when the water gets low and look for them. Gold and Dimonds. A lot of very sad wemon when losses like that happen. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for sharing, I have a pretty awesome knife on my kayak vest, just incase I ever need one, when I flip out the yack. Thanks for sharing my friend, and I think there is more than one use for a knife. Here is an example, your are canoeing and you get hung up in a trot linch, a dive knife is a good option to have with you when you are in the water. Ha, you just said it kayaking. ehehe, Have a blessed week my friend.

I've never been scuba/skin diving, but have always wanted to skin dive (with Jessica Beal or Cameron Diaz). I cannot find their number anywhere though. LOL The serrations on that knife are more for cutting a hemp style rope (I think). Fix the sheath and you have a winner.( Maybe you can put a lanyard on your next wedding ring.)

Being an avid kayaker I liked the knife until reading the Amazon reviews. They echoed your concern about the sheath and apparently it has rust issues. Look forward to the next one you review, maybe it will be a bit better

As a diver, it is fishing line that you need to cut, as in water its mostly invisible and most deadly. With dive knives, try cutting fishing line and netting.

Survival On Purpose does the knife float

Brian, thank you for this review. Yep, I agree on colors for most applications. Nope, don't like the knife, I'll take my Mora and SCHF 52 combination anyday. Sure wish I could roll back 30 years and go into wilderness for a long vacation.
