Using the Earthworks SV33 for real, in my experience, with my voice.

Been engineering I would not dare to think touch your voice with any electronic trickery... amazing!

I don’t really care what anyone says about it. I can hear frequencies up to 22-23kHz and this mic sounds amazing. The great thing about a flat frequency response with an extended range and minimal off-axis coloration is it’s a lot easier to create any “warm” sound or whatever after the fact in post when your recordings are simply accurate. At this point if I see a frequency range of x-20kHz I’m turning away. Sorry Neumann but you better change your game a bit or you’re going to be the next Pro Tools. U87 sounds great but there’s a reason the U67 barely gets used anymore.

Very inspiring again Anton. I should let the singer make as many creative decisions as possible, even if they make technical mistakes. Integrity and consistency of sound is great if you can get it, but the art is the main thing.

1:58 I knew the reaction was coming! Such tampering would obscure the artist's technique and the fidelity of the SV33! Thanks for showing it off.
On the mixing end, you've talked about unnatural EQ. From my experience, everything is done to make the track louder and more separated, particularly for pop and heavier music. In jazz, I don't see much reason for attempting to slot everything artificially with EQ since dynamic range is considered acceptable (and not "distracting"). I work with cheap equipment out of necessity, and need EQ to reveal the close mics compared to the overheads. For voice, particularly with the SV33 and with your style of music, I don't see any reason to cut into the tracks with EQ at all.

I'm really hoping to see a SHURE SM7B review from you, Anton? How about that? Thanks!

Anton have you ever used a Shure KSM 32 or 44 and how would you compare the SV33 to either of those?

Thanks for the in-depth thoughts on the sound. I agree that using a 100 Hz filter on your performance would be wrong. For the standard rock tenor who will never consider going lower than 130 Hz (C3) the SM58 and a 100 Hz filter just cuts the noise.

1:40 Agreed. Vocalists who don't bother refining and mastering their mic technique are just plain lazy. I've met people who didn't want to learn better plosive-control – one even protesting "I can just use a pop filter?!" 🙄 Whaddya do with such people? 😂 And at the same time, that same person always needs not only the best pop filter I have found (a double nylon with 2 cm air between) PLUS a foam windscreen on top of the mic.

(and yes: that person makes a very fine living as a top artist here)

I just don't get it. Mic technique is an art. An art you do very impressively and inspiringly, Anton, btw! 👍

Hello, Mister!
May you indicate this Mic for streamings and newspaper?
Greeting from Brazil.
Lord bless you.

Probably don't use wool gloves though. That's a recipe for triboelectric trouble.

Anton hi, amazing stuff ! Is the recorded song mono on purpose? Would like to hear how your voice sits inside the stereo mix if it sits this well inside a mono instrumental mix. Great stuff, godlike mic technique, really a lost art nowadays !
