Giant Cranes: The Inner Workings of Behemoths | FD Engineering

Explore the inner workings of these fascinating, enormous, and dynamic machines. From the ancient Greek’s early mechanics to the custom-built beasts in Shanghai, this is the A to Z of engineering.

From some of the busiest cities to the mightiest ports, these cranes are the backbone to our urban society. When used correctly, they are tame behemoths, but when used incorrectly, these beasts can cause chaos and destruction, leaving only a twisted wreck where a crane once stood. The workers of these monstrous feats of engineering can be exposed to winds of up to 175 miles an hour, torrential rain, and very long hours, yet they get to enjoy some of the most unique views of our planet possible. After rigorous training in specialised facilities they are some of the few eyes that get to look over untouched Norwegian landscapes, the New York skyline, and breath-taking forest canopies across the world.

The strength and resilience of these machines are truly a testament to human ingenuity.

It's great to see things measured in the new international units - statues of liberty, jumbo jets, football fields, feet - it makes everything so clear.:

Excellent video documentary. They don’t get much better than this.

I witnessed a crane accident where the operator told the engineer that the crane couldn't make the pick they wanted. Fortunately when the lattice boom failed he was able to bail out of the crane and was uninjured. Scary!

Stop with the obnoxious music; this is an interesting video otherwise.

what a shame the narrator uses things like weights of cars height of empire state, city block size football pitches etc No mention of feet meters tonnes or other real measurements so people can relate too

Of course, they chose the wrong helicopter for assembling that crane in the forest. It should have been a Sikorsky skycrane, which is designed specifically for handling these types of loads.

If scientist can play up a potential crisis enough they can have their own private toys installed anywhere on Earth.

@19:30 What stunning design, architecture, and size! Absolutely beautiful! 😮

Why all that blasted noise in the background when the narrator is speaking? So many video editors do it, and it's very annoying!

Could you please take the unrequested music off? If we wanted it, we would ask for it.

Most exciting day for tin knockers is setting rooftop units with a crane!

Hold on, she's concerned about which part is going to give her the biggest rush? Yikes.

I WORKED THESE CRANES AND ENJOYED IT. MY BIGGEST GRIPE WAS HAVING TO CLIMB THE LADDER WHEN IT WAS COATED WITH ICE.

10:26 You obviously don't understand physics at all. Not college stuff. High school physics. Simple stuff. It's called leverage. The boom does NOT change in strength but the leverage against the crane and it's counter weight. The cables and boom can pick up the same weight but the crane will tip over.

What a pity this video didn’t start with the theme song from Mighty Machines

Oregon clip. “Untouched by man” except that ancient forest has been burnt flat many times.
