Autonomous Emergency Braking: AEB Explained

Safety is a top priority for those in the market for a new car, and when it comes to active safety features AEB is changing the game -- in fact it could save your life. Modern car safety systems, like forward collision detection, can help spot danger and warn the driver. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) goes one step further and can automatically apply the brakes. The technology can potentially help lessen the impact of a crash, or in some circumstances even prevent a prang from happening.

There are plenty of vehicles available with AEB as standard or as an option -- in fact, there's more than 50 cars from more than a dozen manufacturers.

As AEB technology is still young, manufacturers are constantly tweaking or overhauling systems. This leads to results that not only vary greatly from brand to brand, but also from model to model, and even between different model years.

What if the car with AEB stops suddenly and automatically to avoid a crash but the car behind does not have AEB?

AEB also gives you false feeling of "I can't crash", so some drivers might concentrate to traffic less, which causes more dangerous situations, and therefore rise the change of real crash, where ABE won't help. Tho it is cool technology

What if it triggers at the wrong time? I've read some stories online where the AEB triggered for no apparent reason, and as a result could lead to a vehicle colliding with you from behind.

Aeb CAN be retrofitted to an older car. They're just not going to do it. They want fresh money from you in the form of you buying another new car.
