If you don't get that missable Frog Coin in the SNES original, you can't complete that side quest where you talk to the enemy in Monstro Town who lauds you for finding all the hidden chests

Always thought that chest placement was pretty devious on the devs considering this is before hidden chest are even introduced to you. By the time they are you already missed out.

This was one that pissed me off as a kid since it forced me to restart the game to complete the frog token collection, he sad part is that unless you knew about it in advance then you would have completely missed your chance at getting it by the time you got the frog coin sensor later on. It would go off in that room, you'd jump all over the room to find it, but you never would.

They also put the signal ring in the item shop basement. It tells you if a screen has hidden chests. You used to get it really late in the game.

Not to mention that the remake makes the ledge look like something you can stand on, which the original does not do

There is another opportunity to get the frog coin, but it may involve some skill. During Mack's invasion of the Kingdom, Spring Shyguys will continuously exit out the door. If you battle one and then run away, they will be temporarily flashing and immobile. You only have a couple of seconds, but you can hop off it to reach the ledge.

The Remake version, you can't do this as you can't run away from them this time.

Those two patrolling toads were in the original game too they just never went over to the door I stood on top of one for 8 hours one day. They would only get as close as the last pillar. Most frustrating thing ever.

not to mention, the ledge in the original looked like it’s out of bounds, just the top of the wall. The remake’s ledge actually looks like a platform you can stand on, furthermore there’s a shadow.

There are TWO times in the SNES a toad runs up and you can get the coin.

Good to know they fixed this in the remake. It was always a pet peeve of mine that you only had one shot to get that chest.

In the days before the internet I had this game and couldn't find this coin. I had the bell so I knew it was in the room and I spent days trying every spot using the walking guards and every angle from them. Eventually I did the only thing I could: I called the Nintendo tip hotline 1-800 number. Dude on the phone new right away what I was talking about. When I heard I had to start over I was SO MAD. Started over, got the coin, got all the rest, triumphantly strolled into Monstro Town and found out there is no reward, just congratulations. Remember, no internet, so I had no idea what to expect. Biggest disappointment of my childhood.

It's been patched. If you try it after the 10 second window now, you'll find invisible "kaizo" chests.

Thank god! It also was not that clear you could go there in the snes version (ledge was very small) but now it's more visible that you can go there.

Played the remake. First time playing mario rpg. Its a classic for sure.
