US & Vietnam Become Allies

The US has picked up yet another ally. With Vietnam giving the United States a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which is the highest level of diplomatic ties that they have to offer. The two will pursue strategic cooperation as well as a semiconductor supply chain that’s immune from China. They’ll also trade agricultural products. The U.S. is Vietnam's largest export market and last year it was the fastest growing economy in Asia. Despite our shared past of war, 84% of Vietnamese have a positive view of America with only 6% having a negative view. This shift by Vietnam is just as much about Vietnam’s anxiety over China as it is over a desire to make more money with America. American investors are already increasingly looking to Vietnam because of their large swath of highly educated young people who are extremely entrepreneurial in spirit. But the honeymoon phase might not last long because the US says it’ll continue to press Vietnam on human rights. Last year it said that it was neither “free nor fair.”

"We fought the Americans for 20 years and the French for 100 years. But we've fought the Chinese for 1000 years."

Vietnam is a wonderful country full of kind, hard working people. The US should value this friendship very highly.

Thank God we are friends now. I hope it’s genuine and I hope it lasts. The Vietnamese people I have met in this country are wonderful and forgiving people. Hoping the ones over there are the same.

US: “I Never thought of i’d die fighting side by side with a vietnamese”

Vietnam: “What about side by side with a friend?”

US: “Ight, that’ll do”

My dad's a Navy vet, one of the stories he occasionally brings up is while stationed in Italy, meeting a Vietnamese man who lived through the war.
The way he described the general opinion of Vietnam about the US is that we were the only ones that left when they asked us (strongly, to put it mildly). Every other colonial power or occupier simply passed them on to someone else, and Vietnam was surprised and grateful for the difference.

"A defeated enemy may rise again, but a reconciled enemy is truly vanquished."

Hopefully this reconciliation sticks, and Vietnam and the US both prosper.

I went to a highschool that was international, meaning we had people all over the world come to our state to enroll. In the 4 years I was there the best student was a Vietnamese boy. I was friends with him for around a year and he was by far the brightest, smartest person I've seen
