Cuenca is Beautiful

I was in awe as I sat in the van on the way to Cuenca from Guayaquil. The view of the Andes Mountains and Las Cajas National Park on the drive in was one of the most beautiful sites I’ve ever seen in my life. I’d lived in Guayaquil and Quito Ecuador for a few years but had never made it to Cuenca, so I was excited to visit.

Cuenca is truly a beautiful city. There is no doubt. El Parque Calderón is clean and pretty. The city square felt safe and there was a great deal of police presence. The Rio Tomebamba that flows through the city appeared clean and the water flowed freely. La Zona Rosa was a cool area where I got my haircut and ate at an Italian Restaurant a couple times. Turi, the Mirador or “Lookout” was OK, nothing spectacular, but it had a decent view of the city below.

A Group of Four Drunken Locals Appear Near Parque Calderón

However, four drunken guys approached me while I was setting up my gimbal near Parque Calderón. I wasn’t worried about anything as I can easily handle my own especially with small men that are wasted. I’m aware however, that they’re are strength in numbers and if a weapon appears then the scenario quickly changes regardless of how tough one thinks they may be. I had to turn on my “fight” response (there was no “flight”) as I had all my gear, it was the middle of the day and I wasn’t running anywhere. I lost all my concentration and just focused on the situation at hand. The men weren’t insulting but annoying as hell, trying to be funny when nothing that came out of their mouths was funny. I hate being around drunken people period let alone drunk locals that want to distract a tourist while eyeballing their valuables at noon time. Who gets hammered that early? While incoherently attempting to spit out a few drunken English words others in the group eyed my valuables, most likely for something to grab.

Don't Balance a Gimbal or Any Time Consuming Task in Unfamiliar Places

I had to re-start from scratch and balance my gimbal. That bothered me the most, as I was still rather new at using it and it took me a while to set up. I learned a lesson that day to set it up in the hotel or a restaurant before venturing out.

Crime Rising in Cuenca According to Police Woman in Parque Calderón

A very kind Police Woman came over to talk to me after. She advised me to be careful of my camera backpack and belongings and even suggested I wear it in front when possible. I appreciated her advice but it’s impossible to wear the large camera backpack in front while recording. She mentioned to me that the crime and overall delinquency in Cuenca had increased quite a bit recently. Part of that may be due to the diaspora of Venezuelans that have come to Ecuador. That’s not to say that the Venezuelans are committing crime whatsoever, but whenever there is mass migration into a country it creates animosity as locals feel the immigrants are taking away jobs from its citizens. Unemployment increases and statistically that increases crime. Moreover, nationals of many countries are just xenophobic. In this case although both groups are Latino and speak the same language. Many Ecuadorians simply don’t want Venezuelan refugees there. It’s sad.

The Group Distraction/Steal Method is Quite Common

The group distraction/steal approach is quite common throughout the world. My Spidey sense activated. I told them "Yo soy de México..." they eventually left. I doubt they believed me based on my appearance but whatever, they left. Perhaps they saw the Policewoman and her colleagues surveilling the situation close by and ready to pounce if needed.

La Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción de Cuenca

The famed cathedral “La Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción de Cuenca” (long name, I know), that sits alongside the Parque Calderón is indeed a site to behold. The blue domes or “cúpulas” are truly stunning. However, I can’t just stare at a building all day and claim a city is great simply because it has a popular landmark. In this case, it’s a catholic church that took 100 years to build and finished in 1985. One can only take so many photos or shoot so much video of the same inanimate object.

The Weather

Only an individual can decide if a particular climate is gratifying to them. I personally felt the climate was quite pleasant during the day reaching about 16.1 °C (61 °F). It was nice to get away from humid, tropical weather. Then again, the one night I ventured out, without a jacket albeit, it got down to about 10 °C (50 °F). I was chilly but I’m originally from Massachusetts so it really wasn’t that big of a deal. I just wish I had something more than a t-shirt on.

No soy ecuatoriano lamentablemente, y aunque amo mi país, no comprendo cómo una ciudad como Cuenca no es reconocida como se merece. En general, Ecuador y los ecuatorianos son extraordinarios!!
