Thoughts on the Panasonic G9 from a G7 User

From a G7 owner, it may seem the G9 like an expensive camera, but the G9 is more than an upgrade to the G85, its a GH5 for photography. Is Panasonic making the Lumix G line photography based. Many of us who bought a G7 or G85 did so for the great video features at a low cost. Don't get me wrong the G9 looks like the perfect choice of those who use a GH5 for photography, its cheaper, and has better photo features. But what about the video guys? Will they lower the cost of the G85?

The holidays are closing in and Panasonic put their G7 G85 and GH4 on sale.

Here are my thoughts as a newbie looking to create cinematic experiences:
The G9 beats the G7 specs-wise hands-down. But from a beginners perspective, one should start with a cheaper camera like the G7 and learn to work around it's limitations. You can use the extra money to buy more gear like prime lenses, gimbals, lighting, filters and professional training in capturing cinematic scenes, editing and color correction. Starting with a more expensive camera doesn't make you a professional. The G9 is a worthy upgrade once you have mastered film-making skills, and you have a collection of gear that can easily adapt to the new upgraded camera

I got the Panasonic g7 for $400 with a kit lens. I like it a lot. I use my canon 6d and 7d for pro work, g7 for walk around lens.

After the G9 it's available I hope that the lumix G85 or the G7 goes down in price...
For the price of the G9 you can buy a full frame camera if you want to do photography

The quality will remain long after the price is forgotten...

We've been using the G7 for short film production. It's been a really useful tool. I saw the G9 and I'm not sure if it's worth $1000 more in price than the G7. As you noted, it seems more like a GH5 lite in some ways. While in other ways, it seems more modern than the GH5. If you were using the camera primarily for shooting short films, would you opt for the GH5 or G9 based on best return on investment?

i dont need huge m4/3 body and pro photo features, thats why i'll wait for G7 successor, smaller, lighter version of GH5 with great video mode, for still my FF with bunch of L lenses is still unbeatable...

What's up with the like/dislike ratio? anyway, you forgot to mention the most important element, Auto-focus, which is dog shit for g7, especially for videos. but you bring good points. too expensive. is there even a point of getting G9 instead of adding a few hundred $s and buying a GH5? Panasonic did not think this through when putting this out. I wonder what GH10 will be like. I am not even excited about getting a G9 knowing this. I'm fine with my G7, even for taking photos. great Camera to practice photography and videography on.

Is G7 good for still photography compare to Canon or Nikon entry level DSRL ?

The Panasonic G9 is an exciting camera! But it's different than what I was hoping for. I forgot to mention that it can shoot 180fps at 1080p just like the GH5. I wonder if there is a crop when shooting 4K. I'm assuming it wont just because its so much like the GH5. *What do you think about the new Panasonic G9?*
