If the story was the other way around, I wonder how France would react to Algeria?!

why is the future generation apologizing for the actions of the ancestors?

Brutal war that few outside of France really understand. Atrocities were committed by both sides and the scars of that war are still very visible. My mom is from a small town in Normandy where her parents and sister are buried in the town’s cemetery. Next to that grave, is one for a local guy who died fighting in Algeria in the early 1960’s. Whenever I visit my grandparent’s grave, I often wonder how that young man died and how he felt about that bloody conflict before passing. Imagine a war so costly that in a small town in the middle of nowhere has victims from that colonial war. I’d expect that from WW1 given the high number of French soldiers (1M+) who died in that global conflict but not a localized conflict in one of France’s former colonies.
