This video explains in a simple way the structure of the Simple Past. To summarize :

-Affirmative (Subject + verb in past tense + object)
-Negative (Subject + did + not + verb + object)
- Interrogative (Did + subject + verb + object)

Affirmative: subjet + verb (in past tense) + objet. Negative: subjet + did+ not + verb + objet.
Interrogative: did + subjet + verb + objet.

contract - decrease in number or size etc.
