LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Self balancing 'Unicycle'

You'd think I'd be bored with self balancing robots by now but I'm not! The Technic Unimog has huge wheels and I thought I might as well put them on Anyway. Then I thought that one wheel might be enough to stay up right, and it was. I know this is not a true unicycle, but it fits the definition. "u·ni·cy·cle, Noun: A cycle with a single wheel, typically used by acrobats." Either way, a fun experiment.

@idioticrandomguy Yeah, I said this wasn't a unicycle in the description and put it in quotations in the title because I saw your comment coming :) This was just a fun experiment I tried. Indeed, I might try to make a true unicycle at one point. Thanks!

@ctimesrocker78 The crashes were actually filmed before the full part you see in the beginning. I then fixed the program, and it didn't crash any more. Just added them in here for fun.

Hey Laurens Valk!
I just wanted to tell you how good your ideas are. I ordered Lego Mindstorms NXT2.0 2 years ago but after I had done this walking robot, I needed mor e ideas and from time to time it got boring. But then I got a book of you and now I'm just expressed how good some people are, especially you!
I'm just able to build your models and programm them but it's so much fun anyway!

Yeah, I use only the gyro functionality of the IMU :)

Why a IMU? Can't you use your HT Gyro and the third motor to counterbalans a weight for the left and right corrections (like human do with their arms)?

that actually counts as a "1.5"-cycle, given the thickness of the wheel :-)
why not try to balance the other axis using the third nxt motor?

Why do you exactly use a imu sensor instead of a gyro, would a gyro sensor do the job?
