Putin is not threatening war; he is stating that NATO missiles hitting strategic sites inside Russia is a de-facto declaration of war against Russia. This was never a proxy war for Russia. When, before 2022, was a war fought on the claimed territory of nuclear power? That's a rhetorical question; the answer is NEVER. So if you think Russia is bluffing, then you don't understand the logic of nuclear deterrence.

You are missing the main issue with long range missiles, it requires NATO targeting systems, which means NATO directly attacks into Russia, which means Russia will start shooting down Awacs and such.

I read somewhere that Ukrainian population was at 44 million at the beginning of this war. Now it’s down to 20 due to death and people fleeing… idk how true this is but to go from 44-20 in little over 2 years is mind boggling

There is no escalation since russia has already used long range missiles on ukraine. Escalation means using means or ends not previously used by either sides in a conflict.
