Introducing Montessori movable alphabet in a box earlylearning #phonics #montessori #alphabetgame

Before we ask the children to write a single word with the movable alphabet, we have to show them how to use the alphabet box!
We adults don't even think about the mechanics of taking letters in and out of the box because we have muscle memory for this. But children don't! They don't have mature neural connections between their fingers, their eyes, and their intentions. They need practice to refine those connections.
1. Invite the child to the lesson. Say, “Today is the day I can finally give you your first lesson on the movable alphabet! Are you free? We’ll need a rug for this work.”
2. After the child has placed the rug, go together to the shelf. Touch the alphabet and name it.
Say, “These are the movable alphabet cards. This is how we carry the box.” Model the carry and then put the box back on the shelf and ask the child to carry it to your rug.
3. Say, “This is how you open and close the box.” Show the child carefully and then give them a turn. (Try to be quieter when you put the lid down. Julia was a little distracted by filming and wasn't as silent as she should have been!)
4. Say, “Let’s get it ready.” Open the box and straighten the letters by using your index finger to push each pile of letter cards all the way to the left of its compartment. Invite the child to help you.
Practice this as much as the child needs before taking out a single letter!
We hope this helps!
