They just want to save science! But not from the people actually defunding it.

Here I annoy you by telling you about the threats to science and the people who have made a career of ignoring them. “The War On Science” will be out soon, and Sabine Hossenfelder, Lawrence Krauss, Richard Dawkins, Gad Saad, and many others are excited. I, an intellectual, will perhaps k_m_s

It’s so wild to me how many people don’t grasp that free speech is to protect you from government backlash for your speech, not social backlash. They genuinely can’t tell the difference. Free speech of the right isn’t under attack it just turns out a lot of people don’t want to listen to bigots.

This was always the danger of socially identifying as "rational" and "skeptical". Rationality and skepticism are tools and methods for understanding information, not personality traits or cultural identities. So many "rational skeptics" end up just confirming their own biases and scoffing at anyone who would disagree, because they're the "rational" one, so their opposition must be irrational. Everyone holds irrational beliefs, ESPECIALLY the folks who think themselves above it.

The "skeptics" forgot to apply skepticism to their own beliefs and prejudices.

Great piece. Thank you. Fascism is here, and any pseudo-intellectual that aligns with this movement should be voraciously exposed. And you hit most of them!

Note: Mahmoud Khalil was a green card holder, he was not here on a student visa.

Part of being a skeptic is having no heroes.

There are skeptics, and then there are contrarians.

"I can't call people slurs and have to treat them with dignity" = threat to free speech

"Black bagging people in the street for criticizing the regime and sending them to death camps in El Salvador" = rule of law

So curious how to these types young people disagreeing with them is an existential threat, but all of media being owned by a handful of billionaires whose preferred party wants to make disagreement with the state a crime never seems to come up.

You can tell it is a genuine “skeptical” / “atheist” book when it has a chapter by conspiracy theorist and devout Christian, Jordan Peterson.

I've said it before and I'll continue to say it until I'm blue in the face: There needs to be a separate PhD track that specializes in communicating research to the public. The current state of academia resembles a software company with only developers—a scenario as problematic as you might imagine.

Edit: A couple of people have mentioned that there are courses and specializations that people can take. While I am all for having them I feel that it is band-aid over a bullet hole. When I mean a separate track I mean that, for example, both people have Biology Phds, both apply for grants, on the bottom of the grant there is a check mark that says "I am doing novel research" or "I am telling people why this research matters", and, crucially, both of them are adequately funded.

Private citizen criticizes private citizen for something they said: "What about the first amendment!"

Federal government punishes private citizen for something they said: "Sounds legit."

One small correction: it's my understanding that Khalil is here as a permanent resident (or "green card") not on a student visa. This makes his attempted deportation even more heinous.

Using ChatGPT when you're a scientist makes me distrust you as a scientist.

It _is_ true that both liberals and conservatives sometimes overreact to things they *perceive* to be offensive. It is _also_ true that conservative overreactions have a significantly higher body count.

The problem with skepticism is that they always stop at that first step. They don't realize that skepticism is only step one, and you aren't suddenly a genius because you hold doubt. You have to actually research what you're skeptical about with reputable sources and experiments and if you can't actually disprove it, then maybe just maybe the expert is actually an expert and maybe you should, I don't know, listen or believe them. It's not really all that hard.

Everything said in this presentation is absolutely a verifiable fact. Unfortunately, I am witnessing it in an extremely personal manner since my son, who is a professor and researcher of immunology and oncology, is being forced to leave the United States, as are many of his fellow colleagues, due to the attack on education and science, which my son spent his life dedicated to. His teaching hospital, run by a prestigious university, where he does research and educates future doctors, has been under attack all year. Thank you for making this known to those who care.

I love the US political system there's "Let's remove everything that make life liveable" and "Let's find middle ground with them".
