InPresence 0251: The Source of Psychic Power

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is also the Grand Prize winner of the 2021 Bigelow Institute essay competition regarding the best evidence for survival of human consciousness after permanent bodily death.

Here he raises the question of whether, on occasions when individuals feel themselves to be receiving psychic gifts through the agency of external entities (spirits, aliens, etc.), they might be actually be projecting from the depths of their own psyche.

I had a number of extraordinary experiences throughout my life, and only in my forties did I allow myself to believe that I'm psychic. Just like you said, I didn't feel like I'm psychic. I found that I'm able to tap into people and give them advice from what feels like guides. Even as I am doing intuitive healing, I feel that I am simply assisting them to heal themselves. I feel that everything is connected and when I am doing this kind of work, I am simply connecting to other aspects of the same self. I think the real questions are - does it really matter if it's entities or just oneself? And more importantly, why couldn't it be both?
If all is One anyways, then we are part of the whole and so are the spirits. Whether they are created by us, or exist on their own, is irrelevant from that stance. I think the mental model and spirit model are both true and overlap with one another. For example, even if you believe that entities are just egregores and thoughtforms, it still raises the question of their autonomy after they are created - does their continued existence and every single action they take, then depend on your conscious control of them, or does something else occur and they take on a life of their own? The same way we procreate children, then they live their own lives free of our complete control. I think the latter is true, we often here about self autonomous thoughtforms and tulpas. And further perhaps the spirits themselves are aspects and archetypes of the collective unconscious that are seeking to be born and expressed through us, so that there comes a motivation that is beyond the self, or any one person. Things like deities and gods, even if they are just archetypes, may still have their own will, that acts upon and through many people over lifetimes.
I also think you cannot remove the mental/psychological aspect from anything we experience. Because we filter and process everything through our minds, so the mind plays a role in everything. So I think everything of the mental model is like the inner mechanics of it all, the psychology and human centered perception. While the spirit model represents the higher dimensions beyond the individual self. To me they are both sides on one coin. You could view it as the individual ego self and the collective unconscious, the microcosm and the macrocosm, etc. Perhaps the collective unconscious and the spirit world are one in the same thing, by different terms and explanations. Or perhaps the collective unconscious is merely the human interface to actual objective existing entities. Either way, both are important.
However if you find yourself too caught up in the mental model and not progressing in your development, I highly advise to incorporate the spirit model into your practice. This is because of the all important aspect of relationship. Since I have explained my view that the collective unconscious is the human perception of the spirit world, then you can see that relationship building with spirits (whether they are objectively real or just thoughtforms), is a vital step in developing channels within/without, between the individual self and these greater aspects and powers. What we build relationship with, share emotions for, hold space within our hearts for, we open doorways to. On the mental side, you can view this as creating pathways between the ego self and the collective unconscious, through the medium of the subconscious. That which is based in emotion and feelings. Building a sense of relationship and connection with these things is vital. Its not so different from developing a relationship with another person - as emotional bonds form, you grow closer, more in tune, etc. So it is the same with these entities and archetypes. As you develop a sense of kindred bond, that is exactly what you're doing, on both the mental and spiritual level. And thusly open the subconscious doorways to greater development and empowerment, through relationship with it. So you can view a god, as simultaneously an objective spirit being, but also an aspect of your higher self, yourself as deity. And spend your time building a relationship with it, so that there is a greater kindred connection, through love and trust. And in time the connection takes on a life of its own, and transmissions are both given and received. This is the true value of the spirit model in my opinion, its one on one relationship based work is not to be underestimated.
When I began to view things in this way, many things clicked for me, and my psychic and spiritual abilities expanded like never before, and have continued to grow ever since. So maybe this will help someone else.

I think we do get subtle communications from departed loved ones, along with psi effects of other kinds. When it comes to claimed physical manifestations like table raps at a seance, I'd want video from infrared cameras covering all parts of the room (especially the area under the table), as well as monitoring of any adjoining rooms, crawlspaces, etc. I'd want an array of microphones that can determine where the sounds are coming in space. Analyzing recordings of the raps and finding that they're acoustically different from someone knocking on a surface is not enough to rule out fakery. If that's the goal, you'd have to take many more precautions. If a medium refuses to let you use an infrared camera and monitor the area under the table, it's a red flag.

I discuss my experiences all the time on my social media. I know there's things I'm doing but also I've had experiences with things including my Daimon as a real physical being. That was a stunner for sure 😂 It really is something I think about all the time while talking to my Guardian Angel and others. I really do think that the so called physical feats during stressful things like a car being on top of someone aren't physical but psychokinesis. The power within is indeed largely not understood and I love the conjuring Phillip experiment. Living it is a constant state of awe and wonder.

Emmanuel Swedenborg would say that humans are vessels which receive wisdom and love from Source/God, but that Source is mediated by the spiritual entities in the spiritual realm. The more that the ego can be put into subordination of altruism and love, the stronger our connection with the spiritual realm becomes.
