Banana sauce (more popularly known as banana ketchup) originated in post-WW2 Philippines. Rationing made imported tomatoes scarce, so a ketchup substitute made from bananas was invented. Also, it actually looks like a grayish brown goop. Red food coloring was added because people were used to ketchup being red.

"Is this sauce made FROM bananas or is it sauce FOR bananas?"

Life's philosophy.

The bean curd thing and the shrimp aren't usually just eaten like that. It's usually put in some type of dish to add more flavor.

You're not supposed to eat fermented bean curd like that. It's to stir fry vegetables with. Eating it like that is equivalent to eating a stock cube.

The bean curd is not a condiment, it's an ingredient for cooking.

I really hate when BuzzFeed does that just to show an 'ewwww' reaction. Saute that fermented bean curd with some green vegetables and it's delicious.

Omg I love fermented bean curd but it should be eaten with something plain like porridge and not such a big piece because it is very salty, but it is really delicious!!

It's sad cause they're spreading all these things like it was jam. I think the worst part is that whoever is actually coming up with the ideas and trying to execute them didn't even bother finding out how it was used. Such as the fermented bean curd. If a group of asians did it, they might mix Peanut butter into rice.... lol.

90% of these things aren't condiments, they're ingredients.

Filipino here. I always thought Tomato based ketchup was weird due to growing up on banana ketchup. I do buy both now living in the states and each one works better for certain foods but not others.

As a Filipino, I’ve always thought that Banana Ketchup was the DEFAULT and Tomato Ketchup was the exception.

LOL, you don't eat fermented bean curd as it is. it is meant to be added during cooking, like salt.

sambal terasi is best eaten with ayam goreng (indonesia's fried chicken which is marinated with spices then deep fried in coconut oil), steamed rice, and a side dish of fried tempeh and tofu!

For the fermented bean curd they ate it wrong, it's kinda like butter you take a piece and spread it.

Filipino necessities: Calamansi (mini limes' juice), soy sauce, garlic vinegar, bagong (shrimp paste), and JUFRAN!!! x3grande I definitely agree. Jufran is a must if you get roasted chicken, or bbq pork on a stick.
