UK Pedestrian Crossings

These are two of the types of pedestrian crossings used in the UK.
The first is a PELICAN Crossing - 'PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled' Crossing, which features the far side red and green man.
The other is a PUFFIN crossing - 'Pedestrian User Friendly INtelligent' crossing, which features a nearside pole mounted red and green man. The issue with PUFFIN crossings is that pedestrians cannot see if the green man is still showing while they are crossing but the crossings can detect the pedestrian so will give them time to cross. The cities of London and Birmingham switched back to PELICAN crossings in 2014 preferring the far sided red and green man.

Which crossing do you prefer?

Thank You for making this video. I understand the difference now. (Had to for my Theory test).
I much prefer the Traditional Pelican Crossing because it's reassuring to see the green + red Man up high in front of you unlike the Puffin Crossing you can't if someone is blocking the screen while waiting on the pavement + once you start to cross that's it you can't see it as well.
As Spiritus said below, if the red + green Man lights were still used as before then it would be better. I totally agree with this.
Maybe we should start a campaign for this.

To everyone here who's watching this because they want to pass their tests... Good luck to us all! 😅

Preferred type in London is Ped-X (same as junction with blackout and no flashing green) and countdown signals for intergreen back to traffic.

Also in the UK you can cross where you like, no such thing as jaywalking over here..

These new ones are terrible. The pedestrian detection is a good idea, but the placement of the lights (or lack of) on the ones I've seen is awful and is more dangerous than before. For example, there's several people waiting to cross, the people furthest away from the button won't see the red/green man because they're obscured by the other people. If a car slows down, people assume that the lights have changed and will start to cross despite the fact the red man is still glowing. I get that the idea is that people look towards the oncoming traffic, but if you can't see the lights then they're completely useless. This problem would be solved if there were red/green man lights on the opposite side of the road as before in addition to the new lights.

You forgot to mention the spinner below the crossing for blind people!

They should just combine pelican and puffin traffic lights. You get the advantage of both then.

The rules have changed slightly. Now it's:
Red man: Fuck it, YOLO!
Green man: hey vsauce here, is green
Flashing green man: Right well I better start walking then

These new ones are dangerous at times you just don't know whether its safe to cross or not
what was wrong with the green and the red man absolutely clear and visible to everybody especially children

These are really dangerous. People often ignore them or stand close to them so you can't see them. Also I've had it when I've crossed on green but the cars have began moving again when I was half way across!

No zebras in this video? Personally I consider Belisha Beacons to be a symbol of British street design. And i like how they're old-fashioned

Haha...they all go across before the green light. That's EXACTLY how it is here. EXACTLY.

Interesting video and voting system at the end, I've not seen this before

I really dislike the new puffins due to the fact the older ones do not have the pedestrian detector thing and they have the beep. Plus the pelican is better due to the fact it has a buzzer for blind people.

After reading the highway code, I could not get my head around the different between a puffin and a pelican crossing. This video makes it very clear now, thank you for sharing.

A pedestrian crossing near me on a very busy road as soon as you press the button the lights start to change were as the one further down the same road takes ages to stop the traffic so i always wait for things like trucks and buses to have either enough stopping distance or push button as there going past.

3:09 I used to work not very far from there and it was before the pub on corner got boarded up
