Coincidentally, Sam and Jonah are at the airport in Seattle, dropping Victoria off for a flight, and Annie arrives at the same gate. Sam sees her and is immediately attracted, however she quickly disappears into the crowd. Annie rents a car and drives to Sam's house. Sam and Jonah have returned from the airport and are just taking a small boat out for a ride. Annie is able to follow them in her car, as they stay close to land. She watches Sam and Jonah playing on the beach together, but she doesn't try to approach them.

What’s the movie Sleepless in Seattle about?
In Chicago, Sam (Tom Hanks from Forrest Gump and Philadelphia) and Jonah (Ross Malinger) Baldwin are at the funeral of Sam’s wife Maggie (Carey Lowell). Shortly after, Sam decides that he and Jonah are going to move to Seattle where everything does not remind him of his wife. One and a half years later, Annie Reed (Meg Ryan from Promised Land and Kate & Leopold) and her boyfriend Walter (Bill Pullman from Spaceballs and Casper) are heading to her parent’s house in separate cars on Christmas Eve, where they are to announce their engagement. Annie listens to a radio talk show when she hears Jonah calling in to say that his dad needs a new wife. Annie feels a connection with Sam and Jonah as they talk about Maggie. Later, Annie begins to question her feelings for Walter and decides to write to Sam a letter suggesting they meet on Valentine’s Day in New York City. Annie does not send the letter however her friend Becky (Rosie O'Donnell from Wide Awake) mails it without her knowing. Annie goes to Seattle and sees Sam for the first time. When she goes back home, she finds a response to her letter, discards it and meets Walter in New York for Valentine’s Day. She ends up breaking their engagement realizing that she has to go see if Sam is on the top of the Empire state building where she proposed they meet. Sam and Jonah are both there; they meet Annie and walk to the elevator hand in hand.

Meg Ryan's ability to drive a car without paying any attention to the road is amazing.

This little scene at the airport is, actually, so important for this movie's themes/plot to work. Tom Hanks' character (Sam) feeling the exact same inexplicable pull towards Annie (Meg Ryan) that Annie felt listening to him on the radio, immediately establishes that Annie is really not crazy. Even though they have never met, there really is something magical between them and he feels it too. That is so key for this movie to work! If we, as an audience, didn't know that Sam feels something for Annie too (even if he doesn't know it's her yet) we could spend the whole movie thinking about how this could all blow up if Annie's instincts are wrong and thinking that she's probably insane. But, because of this scene, we already know she's right. This scene assures us that Annie's feelings are going to be reciprocated by Sam once they actually meet.

I haven't seen this movie in over 15 years and really enjoyed it. I have seen "You've Got Mail" numerous times, though. What amazes me is how much younger both Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan look here compared to "YGM". The movies are only about 5 years apart but they seem so much older. They still look great, don't get me wrong, just a transition to young middle age. We all get older but this was noticeable and stood out to me.

Starting in Lake Union and ending on Alki Beach. When I saw this in the theater, everyone in the room giggled at the insanity of that. Granted, you have to live here, but my god man.... it's like 10 miles. Still... a great movie.

Meg Ryan was such a natural beauty back in time. She lookes so innocent, kind and sweet.
I'm missing those kind of movies nowadays!
Today the new stuff often feels so emotionless and artificial. Everything ist produced in a fast way, the feelings don't seem real to me like in the older movies.
