Dell PowerEdge R740 R640 T640 R650 T440 T340 - How To Set Up RAID

Bob Pellerin “CTOBOB” explores the various RAID options available on a Dell PowerEdge R740 with a PERC controller and SSD drives.

Options are RAID
0 - Performance without redundancy (Fast but not safe)
1 - Mirror (Two drives are mirrored)
5 - 3 or more drives combine. One drive holds the party information.
6. - Same as RAID 5 but with 2 parity drives
10- RAID 1+0

The better the RAID controller the more cache it will have. Rebuilds and speed, while the RAID is degraded, will be better with the higher-end PERC controllers.

I found this video trying to troubleshoot a new R650 with no OS installed. RAID 5 is grayed out and non-selectable. all drive bays are occupied and visible to the controller.

Hi,
Thank you very much for this video.
Question-
I have a R740 Server which is currently setup with the software Raid setup wizard from Windows. I need to change this through the physical controller.
I see that the server has a 405-AANU : PERC H330 RAID Controller, Min icard. From what I have read from Dell Websites Raid 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 would be possible.
From your video, I can setup a Raid-5 using the Life Cycle controller but what would happen to the Raid5 Setup created through the internal wizard. Would I lose all the Data? What should I anticipate?
Thank you in advance.

hi there i have T340 Dell. First i changed in Bios the Sata mode to Raid mode. Then with F10 started before os depolyment to configure Raid. I can see 2 controllers S140 and H330. If i select S140 it says it cannot connect with physical drives (insufficient physical drive space STOR0507- Connect additional physical drives, reboot and select Option Rom). With H330 controller it continues normally. I have 2 SSD 480 GB. Should i continue with H330 ? Last question should i change in bios sata to raid or it does not mind because i have hardware raid? . Thanks

Hi there! I am adding 16TB x 1 SATA HDD hot-plug hard disk to add more storage in our Dell PowerEdge T440 Server, that currently has RAID-1 (446GB x 2 SATA SSD) and RAID-5 (3725GB x 4 SATA HDD). The added new HDD is in the current state Ready (not Online).

Question: What is the best way to add this additional hard disk? Can I add this to the existing RAID-5? Or, will it be better to create a new Virtual Disk? I am okay either way and I really appreciated any guidance.

Thanks a lot for your help!
