Powerblock vs NÜOBELL Adjustable Dumbbells - The Quick Change Choice!

In my search for the best adjustable dumbbells, the Powerblocks and NUOBELL's are at the top of the list. But, which reigns supreme for 2022 and beyond...?

Adjustable Dumbbells are one of the first things home gym owners add to their setups. They take up less space, are more affordable, and allow for a variety of training in comparison to fixed dumbbells. In some ways, they're superior.

But, when you decide on adjustable dumbbells, you then have to decide on the brand and model. Today, I'm comparing two of the front-runners. Powerblocks, one of the original adjustable dumbbells with NÜOBELLs, the latest and greatest adjustable dbell.

Which is the best adjustable dumbbell for most home gym owners? The answer may surprise you...

Coop's Recommendation - 10:12

Just wanted to provide some more context after seeing some comments on pricing of Powerblocks. I decided to go on the ol' Wayback Machine and compare the release of the Best Adjustable DB content and price changes for Powerblock.

They actually weren't as close together as I assumed when we recorded this review. Nearly every company has been raising prices this year as well, so it's not surprising a USA-made product like the Elite series jumped in price.

I stand by the comment that I think Powerblocks and NÜOBELLs are getting closer in competing for the best value spot, but I hate making a statement that varies from reality. Hopefully, prices decrease in 2022 as owning a home gym continues to get more expensive across the board.

Massive respect for calling out Powerblock price gouging (arguably). Always to glad to see unbiased reviews.

I love the Nuö Bell. I started off with a pair of 50’s and loved them so much that I bought a second pair of 80’s so I could super set without having to go back to the cradle. It was still cheaper than buying a full set of 5-80lbs dumbbells. It would be great if they went up to 100 lbs but imo anything heavier than 80 I would probably feel better if it was a solid dumbbell with no moving parts. They only downside about the nuö bell is I am afraid to drop the weights at the end of the set like I used to do at the gym but I find that my lifts are a lot cleaner and more controlled because I don’t want to damage the mechanism.. so I’ll take it! The other advantage that wasn’t talked about nearly enough is how the nuö bell actually looks and feels like a real dumbbell. The flat ends and the size of the dumbbell as you adjust it is really second to none!

I have the original Powerblock 90s (I think I bought them in 1995). I have absolutely used and abused them for getting close to 30 years now. They were a 1 time purchase that cost less than a year's gym membership. I've been through multiple benches and racks during this same time but my Olympic Weights (bought used from a gym that I used to work in back in college) and my Powerblock dumbbells have stood up through everything. Just last year I had the plastic casing on the outside of one of the clips break when my son dropped them at the end of a set. I super-glued it back on and it's fine now, but even that didn't affect the usability. I can testify to Powerblock's durability. They have essentially lasted me for my whole life and I expect them to continue to (I'm 50). Nothing beats free iron weights. They really last a lifetime if you invest in them.

I love the durability of my powerblocks but one thing not mentioned people should be aware of is that the weights are connected via those outside tubes, not the central handle. It may sound trivial but you can feel a difference in how the weight is distributed around your hand rather than through the central handle.

Traveled all over Texas drilling oil. The Powerblocks have traveled with me to multiple drilling rigs over several years. Zero complaints. Highly recommend purchase. Tough. Durable. Easy to travel with.

100 pound noubells would definitely fix the internal battle I’ve been having on which ones to buy 👍

Swapped my powerblocks for ironmasters this week and couldn't be happier. Don't underestimate the discomfort of the Powerblock cages!

Just got nuobells and absolutely love them. Feel like traditional dumbbells and as such so much more versatile. I love doing dumbell snatches and other dynamic movements which would be almost impossible with powerblocks. Especially if alternating hands during workouts.

I bought the Power Blocks when they first came out in 1993 . They’re about 50 lbs and they are still in perfect shape . No dumbbells are perfect but they’re a brilliant, sturdy design . Hard to beat .

As a traveling personal trainer the power blocks are the best option as it doesn’t require an additional casing to adjust the weights

Nüobell is 🔥🔥🔥. Great review per usual… Got mine Feb 2021 (10 months) and has been awesome. Quality is great, plastic hasn’t been an issue, no hiccups, AND they feel just like a dumbbell. Best looking adjustable dumbbell IMO.
Please keep doing more of these reviews Coop! 👍

P.S. Watching reviews of equipment I own makes me want to go use it… useful for pre-workout or motivation sometimes, thanks again.

Powerblocks are amazing! Very happy with my investment in the 90lb add on.
However, you do have to be more careful when selecting weights so that you don't have one side of the pin on yellow and the other side on green.

I have the Nuobells. They are amazing. I use them daily! Had them since your last video and highly recommend them. Only
downside is with not knowing their impact ability I am careful when placing them down after a set! Best purchase for my home gym!

Love the channel coop! Keep it going!

IMO Powerblocks were only a good option because of their lower price. I've used them a fair bit and they are really awkward and uncomfortable for a wide range of movements. With the price increase I would never consider them. Seems like they're mostly just gouging due to the decrease in stock for all adjustable dumbbells in general.

I wanted a traditional dumbbell feel. I initially tried to go iron masters but just couldn't get a set. Eventually I went for nuobells and love them. Buy at 80lbs fellas. Even the noobs (which is me) will outgrow 50lbs real quick. Buying tips: I bought from Smrtft and got them on free shipping promotion, which they do periodically (especially around holidays). Also, for some reason, they didn't charge sales tax to my state, which saved far more than shipping. The sales tax discount was not true for all retailers I looked at. So shop around depending on your location.

I bought my powerblocks 90LB dumbbells back in 2003 and have had zero issues with them.

As someone who just started building my gym in the last year - PowerBlocks shot themselves in the foot with the increase. I know COVID was hard - but that was too much.

Love all the options now, and your reviews are very comprehensive. I've had my Powerblocks since 2001. THOUSANDS of workouts. Still going strong. Never had a problem with the cage design and quite like the square form factor (never had one roll off a bench). One thing I don't see in your reviews is stands. My Powerblocks came with super durable, steel, angled, thigh high stands. If I have to sit them on the ground, a lot of exercises become full body (I have to do 160lb squats before and after my bench press). Love to see the stands these other manufacturers sell.
