True Lies Longplay (SNES) [50 FPS]

Developed by Beam Software and published by LJN in 1995

Having completed the Mega Drive version of True Lies, we already established that it was a solid shooter and a decent movie tie-in. GIven that the game was released on both Sega and Nintendo's 16-bit consoles, I decided to play the SNES version and take a look to see if there are any noticeable differences between the two platforms.

The first thing that's immediately noticeable is the improved music on the SNES version, which features digital samples. Despite the improvement in the music, the sound effects seem slightly muffled compared to the MD version.

Graphically, both titles are very similar, but there are noticeable differences. The SNES appears to have an extended colour palette as certain items and sprites have more colour (e.g. compare the colour of the curtains and carpets of the château stage). The SNES artwork has slightly more natural colouring and the graphics are less pixelated than the MD version. Certain enemy sprites have multi-coloured outfits, where as they have a single shade in the MD version; this could be a limitation of the MD colour palette?

In gameplay terms, I felt that the sprite collision detection was more forgiving on the SNES. Bullets seemed to be able to pass closer to the player sprite before registering as a hit, which did make things easier when playing .

All things considered, there is very little to choose between the two version, colour palettes aside.True Lies is an example of a multiplatform game done well where owners of either MD or SNES would have had very similar experience.

One of the best games from the childhood blockbuster days. I loved the snow level!

I loved this game when I was a kid. To this day, I still laugh thinking about the random people in each stage. You're having a gunfight with people and there's someone walking by on the phone like it's nothing. "I can't hear you, this dude is firing a no-reload shotgun everywhere. What? No, I didn't forget to buy cereal! Hold on, they're shooting again."

My dad bought this one for me when it came out... The best movie licensed game for snes and it was published by ljn.

This game used to be my absolute favorite game back when I was a kid. I used to play this game so much when I was a kid that I had all of the enemy locations down so I could shoot a lot of them when they were still off screen, I remembered how many shots it took to take all of the different types of enemies down, and I remembered which ones carried grenades so you could time a single shot and they'd drop the grenade and blow themselves up.

I can't even believe I got thru games like this as a little kid. I look at it now and think, how the heck did I make it thru that crazy labyrinth, no direction indicators or map. Lol awesome!!

It's a crime this game isn't more well-known about. It would blow AVGN's mind to find a good Schwarzenegger game.

Just cleaned up my moms attic and i found this game in box with manual. My dad bought it for me when it came out, allways remembered that i traded it for a link to the past couple years later. Very good game, only hard as hell, never made it past the park level.
