Fieldgrowing Maple Bonsai is easy ( Cut everything off )

Field growing maple bonsai trunks is one thing in particular.. Regular pruning of roots and branches to induce taper in the trunk and facilitate the development of a nice root spread where all roots are evenly sized.

Every two years or so ligt the trees. Prune back long branches and work on the roots to get a nicely tapered trunk.

Every time I find a video of you digging your field grown trees, I am jealous of the soil. Such hard clay here that even in the vegie garden the digging is not that easy!! Slower growth in my trees, but patience will pay off in time . . .

I would have liked to have seen the plant development after doing this.

Do you dig it up every 2 years and cut back the roots before popping it back in the he ground or just cut back the top growth?

How does this survive that... Trees are amazing

Have you ever tried making a bonsai fruit tree such as a mulberry bonsai with fruit?

What did you apply to the cuttings that looks like a white paste?

Wow.…. Will that really survive with all the clipping? Love to see updates. Thanks!

And then you replant that??? Ive never heard iff field growingbut i havent heard if a lot of things bonsai so just makes me happier i have more options!!

Can i ask what type of soil do you use? I just bought a bag if akadama for like 23$ and its maybe 7lbs of 3-6mm “hard akadama” but it breaks when I squeeze it (not sure if thats the way its supposed to be) but i was going to get lava rocks and mix 1/3 akadama lava rocks and regular soil for my pussywillow bonsai trees.

Akadama seems to be expensive and other then maybe crushed hydroton idk what couple replace it im soil mixes, im concerned about all the little projects i have going on that it will take 300$ in akadama to play around. And thats if the vendor i bought from is on it seems to be even more expensive if you get the japanese imported brand.

How old is the beauty? How much longer until it’s ready for a pot?

Nice video, but it has more questions from us all than it should

How do you clean up the bark that has been underground for so many years so it matches the bark above ground?

What time of year do you do this? I did it to mine that I had grown from a seedling for ten years and it killed it!

Do you do anything about those open wounds though?
