Burlington has long embodied the earthy progressivism and can-do independence that define the state’s spirit. Lately that ethos has taken on a sophisticated sheen.

For everyone who keeps saying, "there aren't any black people" please think about why that could be before claiming people in Vermont are racists. Not a lot of black people in an area does not equal all the white people in that area are racist every time this happens. Vermont was one of the first states that was founded in the US. There were not black people there when it was founded (I am not speaking about Native Americans in this, that is a WHOLE other conversation, I'm just speaking on the black population of Vermont). As we all know, black people were brought to the US as slaves. Vermont was the first states to ban slavery, well before any other state. Which meant many of the black people living in Vermont; left. Vermont did not have the large plantations or large cities that other states had which meant even after they were no longer slaves, there was little work for black people at that time in Vermont. Vermont is cold a majority of the year so they don't have the agricultural work that other states have and this was most of the work that black people at this time could get a job doing. Not to mention, the population of Vermont is one of the smallest in the country to begin with. Because of these reasons, there was no "pull" for black people to stay in Vermont or come back to to this state. So, could there be racist people living in Vermont? Absolutely! There was racist people everywhere! Even in the most liberal of towns and cities. There are examples of racist and hate crimes everywhere in this country - it was built on racist ideals (that's a whole other conversation as well!). However, to call an entire state racist, simply because there aren't a lot of black people living there is unfair. We have to look at the history and analyze that as well.

This reminds me so much of Bellingham, WA with the incredible scenery and bar scene. I must say, however, that the beauty of the fall foilage in Vermont surpasses that of Bellingham by miles.

Visited there last week. Beautiful scenery and felt good to get out of nyc. Did the beer tour and Matt (he’s in the video) is a really cool guy and very informative about not just beer but about Vermont’s history and what’s going on today.

As inclusive as this video is, the obviously neglect of Ben and Jerry’s, as well as church street as a whole is definitely suspicious to say the least.

Guys I live here. To answer your question, yes it is a very diverse place. Literally half my friends are part of the LGBT community and we're all fine with that. Yes there is larger ratio of white people than any other race, but that doesn't mean it's a racist state. Anyone is welcome. Not to mention it's a beautiful place as well. Also it's one of the safest towns to raise children in the world.

I lived in (South) Burlington for a year as a preteen in 1970 and loved it. It is truly a special place. I've been back about 5 times since then -- not nearly enough -- and still find it very charming, especially since the city center has changed so little since I lived there, and most changes have been for the better (like making Church St. pedestrian-only). Make sure to visit if you can!

Reminds me of a city called Bellingham I spent five years in back in Washington. The lakeside location kind of reminds me of the Puget sound.

This city popped up in my Spotify wrapped. Apparently people’s music taste here is most similar to mine and are far more likely to be fans of Ween, Beach House and Aphex Twin.
