Foraging and natural dyeing with this abundant garden plant gives vibrant coral pinks and reds. Commonly found in many yards, roadside ditches and trail paths, Common bedstraw, also known as Cleavers (Galium aparine) or goosegrass, roots hold deep and stable shades of peaches, coral pinks and reds. It's definitely worth taking a closer look at this strong dyer.

Oh yeah. It's quite common here during spring and summer.

I've managed to harvest using some branches to lift the crippling plants to get access to the stem and roots and then I use some tool like a small rake for loosen up the soil around it.

I've gathered a good chunk of roots. My first attempt wasn't successful, but I think with these tips I can get better results for the next time. Thanks for the video

Hi! I am also in the PNW. Have you found there is a better time of year to harvest the roots? There are a lot around right now but the few I've pulled up have very, very tiny roots! Do the roots develop more as it turns to summer? Thanks!

what a beautiful color! Does it fade away with time or sunlight?

Thanks for the great video! I've noticed a lot of plant dye recipes require mordant, what if you don't use a mordant? Does the dye not stick or not come out as bright?

Since this plant is entirely edible, I wonder if this would be useful for food dye

They say to keep it below 180F to get red rather than brown over that.

Hi! Your videos are truly interesting! I tried collecting bedstraw but after a lot of work I reached a mere 3g of dry roots! 😂 it's not enough for a dye bath and It made me wonder...have you ever tried ecoprinting with It? Thank you ❤
