I remember my 9th grade science teacher taking us out on the soccer field to show us the relative distances of planets from the sun. Great perspective given that all the illustrations show them (understandably) right next to each other.

I demonstrated part of this for my science students! I measured out a string to the earth-moon distance to scale with a 12 inch globe, and got a smaller globe pretty close to the scale size of the moon, then asked everyone in the class to put a piece of tape on the fllor where they thought the distance was. I had a big lab classroom that year, so it could all fit in one room. To my surprise, a few actually overestimated.
