Steve & Laurie - American Graffiti tribute

To The Aisle - The Five Satins (1957)
American Graffiti (1973)

Original songs from the soundtrack of American Graffiti & More American Graffiti - 50s 60s Diner Music

"To the Aisle" is a 1957 song recorded by The Five Satins with songwriting credits to group members Jim Freeman, Jessie Murphy, Bill Baker, Tommy Killebrew, and John Brown. The arrangement included an alto saxophone and an oboe played in harmony during the bridge and the oboe at the song's closing, very unusual for the time.

In July 1957, the song peaked at #5 on the R&B charts and #25 on the Hot 100.

Lyrics:-
First a boy and a girl meet each other
Then they sit down to talk for a while
In your heart, you'll want her for a lover
While each step, draws you closer to the aisle
You may start with a simple conversation
My darling, please put me on trial
She says, yes and your heart starts beating
While each step, draws you closer to the aisle
You ask her if she loves you she answers, "I do"
Your heart starts glowing inside
And then you will know she is just for you
While each step, draws you closer to the aisle
Then you put a ring on her finger
And the tears start flowing awhile
Then you'll know she's yours forever
While each step, draws you closer to the aisle
She says, yes and your heart starts beating
While each step, draws you closer to the aisle

American Graffiti is a 1973 American coming-of-age comedy film directed and co-written by George Lucas starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Harrison Ford, Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Bo Hopkins, and Wolfman Jack. Suzanne Somers, Kathleen Quinlan, Debralee Scott, and Joe Spano also appear in the film.

Set in Modesto, California, in 1962, the film is a study of the cruising and early rock 'n' roll cultures popular among Lucas's age group at the time. Through a series of vignettes, the film tells the story of a group of teenagers and their adventures over the course of a single night.

An on-screen epilogue reveals that John was killed by a drunk driver in 1964, Terry was reported missing in action near An Lộc in 1965, Steve is an insurance agent in Modesto and Curt is a writer in Canada.

American Graffiti was, and is, and probably will always be, my favorite movie. I saw it 4 times in the theater when it was released. I bought the album, then bought the CD, and of course, the DVD of this classic film. This film truly is, an icon.

A real labour of love for ‘soul gladiator’ to have assembled these enduring clips of Steve (Ron Howard) and Laurie (Cindy Williams).

I instantly thought of their pivotal roles in American Graffiti (and sequel More American Graffiti) when news broke this week of Cindy’s passing.

A great decision a few years later for producers of American Graffiti-inspired Happy Days to cast Cindy as Shirley and Penny Marshall as Laverne as dates for Ron Howard’s character Richie and the Fonz played by Henry Winkler. That led, of course, to the spin-off series Laverne & Shirley.

Rest in peace Cindy Williams.
