That's why I love this channel: Real troubleshooting! No cut video bs with just the fix part of the problem.

I love how your videos are presented in a way that a hobbyist/have-a-go home-user could learn from it, and detailed enough that a repair shop can also learn from it

Thanks Graham, I have a background in electronics, your presentation style is great for learning. Especially the way you explain your decision making, to solve the fault. I would have loved to have had a lecturer explain things like you do.

Nice repair and explanation. BTW: It wasn't necessary here, but for the sake of completeness, there are some more checks one can do with mosfets. (1) Sometimes the short isn't between source and drain but between gate and source (or drain). So that's also worth checking if you can't find a more obvious fault. (2) You can usually test mosfets in circuit by using 2 multimeters (and a couple of clip leads or soldered wires). One meter in resistance (or diode) mode measures between source and drain, the other in diode mode on the gate to turn the mosfet on and off. And if the mosfet stays on after you remove the second meter then the gate is floating (which it probably shouldn't be) and you need to check the gate drive.

Thanks alot for sharing info and experiences, i've learned alot from your videos. May be i am wrong but 7:53 what i know is (doesn't matter p or n channel mosfet) the 4 pins that's together is the drain and on the other side 3 pins for source and 1 gate.. Merry Xmas 🎉

For an N-channel MOSFET, the Source pins (3 pins) are on the same side as the Gate, and the Drain pins on the other side (4 pins), not the other way around. Hence, the body diode is connected between Source and Drain, Anode on the Source, and Cathode on the Drain, this is why to measure the body diode, you'd reverse the probes, putting the red probe on the Anode (any of the 3 Source pins), and the black probe on the Cathode (any of the 4 Drain pins).

Done watching, thank you very much for the informative repair video. I have learned significantly more troubleshooting & repair lessons in this tutorial video and to your other repair videos as well compared to my ENTIRE 4 YEARS OF COLLEGE due to the rotten & outdated standards of education here in the Philippines. I hope you will soon have a mini-series for Schematic & Boardview-free Voltage/Power Rail Tracing[12V/18-20V Main Voltage Rail, 5V, 3.3V, CPU/GPU Core Voltage Rail, DRAM Voltage Rail, IGPU Voltage Rail, System Agent/Northbridge Voltage Rail, PCH Voltage Rail, BIOS Voltage Rail, Battery Power Rail], Proper method of testing/checking of potentially faulty MOSFETs & ICs/Controller Chips, CPU/GPU/PCH Reballing and BIOS Bin File Editing.

Gotta say, when I saw you put the replacement MOSFET on the board I thought Wow there's a right old crack in that ( then a clean and everything was fine), Phew!

Merry Christmas, Graham!

I wonder what percentage of Graham's customers ever watch their repair being made.
