If you're spending a long period of time somewhere, consider a place that will keep you interested longer than a weekend. Language, culture, etc. Lived a year in Florence, best experience of my life.

I decided to be an exchange student in high school... They offered me Jamaica or Hong Kong, both of which had English as an official language, and I wanted the experience of living somewhere where I couldn't rely on English. They sent me to Hungary. There, I bet my husband (an exchange student from Brazil), and the rest, as they say is history... Best decision I ever made.

Good to see you are saying good things about my state: Minas Gerais (MG) in Brazil! Safety in Brazil is a trouble, but MG is dealing better than other states!

Look at what you are studying. That should determine where you want to study; Music, Italy, Art, France, Law, England. Then you can plan short jaunts from there. Weekend trips into the surrounding area, longer trips into surrounding countries. Europe is SO SMALL and there is SO MUCH there.

My wife did whirlwind bus tour of Europe to end her study abroad. Day trips through Ireland with local students so got to see everything Irish.

🥇 Outstanding tips, thank you Mark! My daughter is likely studying abroad (gradschool) next year, I’m tagging along for some of it, and we’ll surely put your points/advice to good use…thanks again & congrats on the upcoming 1M milestone! 🥳

Don't forget to take your student ID. There's plenty of discounts on public transportation and other services in Europe for students!

I studied abroad 2 years ago and another thing I thought about was destinations that are easier to acclimate to/handle as a college student rather than an older adult or maybe with a family. For example bustling Istanbul or Budapest may be easier to handle as a younger person rather than with a family. Basically a destination with less tourist infrastructure. It's easier to do Paris Rome or London as an older adult.

I'd love to get into the trades and study abroad

Where should I study abroad if I want to be in an interesting connected location but also a more rural area than say Rome? A location that very stress-free and safe.

Always great advice, professor... now, could I go back 40 years and be a international student again? 😂 Question: I'm a huge railfan ( the easiest and often most affordable way to get around Europe, etc.). Your logo has always been a train in-station. Where did that originate?

I'm applying for a homestay program for high schoolers mainly this winter. But my English is already like B2 or possibly C1. Do you think it's worth money? I hear the average English ability of the participants is usually A1. I'll be using the subsidy but it'll still be more than 4000 dollars for two weeks.

Professor Wolters, I’m a college student although I made poor decisions when I was younger and am now a felon. Any recommendations for studying abroad?

If studying abroad is a big deal to you, consider that a factor when you choose undergrad programs to begin with. My college only offered study abroad (at least for a whole semester) as something the individual had to arrange, which meant more immersion but also more planning (and a good chance of credits not transferring). My brother's college on the other hand did study abroad as a group, so not only did they know exactly what credits to save for that term, but they also went on week-long trips all over the Mediterranean. Of course, they were kind of in their own bubble so YMMV.
