Some DSLR's like the GH5 are able to supply power to your wired lavalier mic. But what if you want to use it with a XLR recorder or Mixer? You’ll want this RODE VXLR+ adapter as it can safely convert 48v phantom power down to 3-5v so that you don’t damage your lavalier microphone! Not only that, this XLR to 3.5 adapter can also be used as a regular adapter and works perfectly with the Rode Wireless Go! Look no further and get yourself this nifty XLR phantom power adapter for your audio kit.

The 3v required by the cheap mics is called plug-in power. It is standard for mics that plugs into pc computers or smartphones. However, computer requires a TRS plug and smartphone requires a TRRS plug. There are adapters that convert between these two. The VXLR+ expects a TRS plug. Most cheap lav mics come with TRRS plug and therefore need to be converted to TRS plug before plugging into the VXLR+. Usually, the adapter comes with the mic, but you will end up with an adapter on top of an adapter sticking out of the audio recorder.

Even very expensive lav microphones don’t necessarily power themselves. Look up DPA microphones. They only sell the microphone with varying connector types (one of which is a 3.5mm jack) on it’s own so they can be used with whatever kind of wired or wireless connection the customer wants. So this adapter isn’t necessarily meant to be used with cheap lavs.

Nice informative video,
I'd suggest saying "The answers come first" in your intro's over "The answers comes first"
Maybe unintended, just something that stands out to me in your videos

Mic sounds good! I have that same Tascam DR 40, was always wondering the "phantom power" function never worked with it. ALSO: If you know how to do it, I would LOVE to see a tutorial on setting two different volume levels (using two mics) recording with the DR 40. THANK YOU

Awesome little product!
I’d like to connect my XLR shotgun mic to my GH5. The XLR1 looks great but I’m going try to test it going through my zoom h5.

Hey maybe you have an answer I have the zoom f4 recorder and my shotgun mic sounds great but my lav mics sound noisy and thin i connected them with a 3.5 adapter to xlr. I do have the phantom on for the lavs so it should be supplying the power it needs

Interesting product. I’m trying to figure out if I can sneak lav mics into wardrobe for narrative shoots.

Great video
I imagine that it works well/fine with wireless Lavalier receivers too in order to connect the receiver to an interface and capture the recorder audio on a DAW?

I wonder if this could make a shotgun mic like the Takstar SGC-598 work without a battery in it. Or if it could further improve the audio quality of the Rode VideoMicro

Excellent video. I have given Thums up and subscribed to your channel. I am very new to audio equipment. I have bought two Rode lav mics, one Rode Go, Zoom H5. Also an old Azden Shotgun which uses a small battery cell. I think I switched on its power and phantom power of H5. It blew something and H5 had to be replaced.

I have two questions:

1. Do I need VXLR to plug in Lav Mic into XLR jack?

2. When to switch ON phantom power while using mics. While using Azden with battery, what to do?

Very nice video. I have a question: Can I use VXLR+ adapter for ANY microphone that has 3.5mm plug? I mean, if a mic needs 3-5v (plug-in power), or don't need any kind of conversion...does it also work in both cases?
